JK va JKU: Safety

I know this has been thoroughly discussed but I have yet to find an answer to my question. What is safer, a JKU without side airbags or a JK with them? This is going to be my first car and my mother obviously wants me to be safe, but it is tough to find used JKs that have side airbags. The JKU has a moderate side crash test vs the JKs poor evaluation. So what are your opinions?

Safety ratings and crumple zones are overrated.

^^^ That. Take a look at some of the accidents forum members have been in. Haven't read one where somebody was seriously hurt while driving their jeep. One guy got rear ended by a semi and walked away with a bruise. And if this is your first car I would go with the JK, shorter wheel base will be super easy to drive.

I have worked with a few surgeons - military and civilian - who will only daily drive vehicles with side airbags. Of course some of them smoke as well but I digress...

Bump, does anyone have any stories or knowledge of people in side collisions with a Jeep?

I am sure the google machine can help with that. It is my opinion that side air bags will help in certain impact situations.
