Jk vs tj?

M looking to buy a jeep and idk if I should get a tj or spend a little more a get a jk? I do like the 4 door a lot but the tj are more in my price range.

Do you need 4 doors?

I like the short wheel base 2 door models myself!

TJ gets my vote.

My take: The 4.0 TJ is a better rig than the early 3.8 powered JK. The later 3.6 powered JK is better than the TJ's.

If I was looking at used and something I wasn't going to launch into with major mods, a 3.8 JK wouldn't be on my buy list. A gutless wonder that doesn't do well with things like superchargers.

If it's just a toy buy the TJ but if it's a DD go with the JK. In any case, don't stretch your budget beyond what you can afford in any case.

Judging from your profile name I'd say you've made your pick.

I'm with Duffer on the engine choices. Earlier 3.8 are too sluggish for my liking. Best advice would be to drive both.

If you have to ask... Always get the newer one it should be better and last longer, unless there is something specific and important to your planned build on an older one.

I'm with this. I had a TJ, loved it. Great toy. It felt like really *Jeepy*.

I eventually wanted to do longer trips, with better mileage, at interstate speed, in more comfort, so I got my JK. The 3.6l sold me. It's still a toy.

If I needed it as a DD, or if I had a family, it would be 4-door.

The TJs are awesome because they are smaller then the JK and the 4.0L engine is a piece of cake to work on yourself. Plenty of offroad capability. I had a '99 until the family got bigger and I recently switched to a JK Unilimited, mainly because the 2013 came in the awesome Commando Green; which is the closest to OD green I've seen in a standard Wrangler color. And the amount of cargo space is awesome when you have 2 kids and dog, plus all your gear.

For me it was the TJ. All I need is a/c and cruise control with a 5 speed.
Plain and somewhat simple to work on .....
without all the comforts you find in the JK,
that I don't want problems with on down the road.

But to each their own.

I don't think you will miss not having a JK but would miss not having a TJ.

I've heard people say the TJ's don't do highway speeds. BS. I have a TJ and it gets on the highway just fine. I was doing 75 today. The engine is good and we'll maintained and so is the suspension and driving components.

Thing is, get what you think you will love, and what you want to drive. We can all give you our opinion, but ya know T her like those holes on your backside...Each person has their very own.

Smart cars are just fine at 75 MPH too.

It's not a knock on the TJ. It's a simple tradeoff. The short wheel base that makes it nimble and agile off road is a limiting factor on the highway.

I was just expressing my disagreement for that sentiment. I haven't had much trade off on Highway performance. I however, have heard some say that. I just have not experienced that particular issue.

Thank you all for the input I think I'm going to go with a 2008 unlimited I found for a good price, I just love the 4 doors that's just my opinion

JK is more comfortable and just as capable as TJ. I love my TJ but if I could get all my money out of it I would start over with a JK. I DD a soft top TJ, fun except for the mileage and the noise.
