| Just got a wrangler! It broke down not sure what happened! Just bought I jeep 1994 wrangler that has been sitting outside on a backyard for over 3 months, drove around the block a bit it ran fine. I didnt have time to check fluids or anything I liked the low price so I just test drove liked it and Bought it. So I drive it home take it on the freeway doing around 55 all is going great very smooth ride no weird noises or anything after 7 miles or so the acceleration started wanting to die on me being choppy, then I heard a loud pop like a shot gun going off I believe it was the spark plugs. So i had to keep pulling over to let the car rest and go again at speeds of 20-30 Mph it wouldn't go faster so I decided to just stop and get it towed. I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT CARS I JUST WANTED A WRANGLER FOR THE SUMMER AS A RECREATIONAL VEHICLE. I checked the fluids when i got home the oil was fine and the transmission fluid had a nice red color but i could tell it wasnt new. when i got home i drove it on my drive way all seemed fine. I think it only happens at high speeds after 30min of driving or so..What do you guys think happened to it? HELP! |

Sounds like it could be a fuel problem. Might have water in the tank or trash in the filter. Then again the timing could be off. Best bet if your not mechanically inclined is to take to a shop and get it diagnosed. Also a good idea to change the oil and trans fluid too, no telling how old it is, no matter what it looks like. Probably wouldn't hurt to have the diff fluids checked as well.

Yes Im going to take it to a shop asap I was just wondering if it was anything major, hopefully it isn't... but will a fuel problem make the car pop like that? I got most worried about that loud popping noise what was that about?

I had an old 70s chevy pickup that I was restoring that would do the same exact thing. The fuel tank ended up being rusted out, and the rust partials would clog the fuel filter. Sounds like you have a fuel problem somewhere..

I located the Fuel Filter its fairly easy to replace but its so cold outside that I rather just pay someone to do it, even if thats not the problem im going have it changed anyway

So for the most part you guys think is a fuel problem or maybe something to do with the exhaust system (that would make sence there is a hole in it somewhere)

I heard it coming out of the tail pipe on the back (passanger side) of the car but again it could have been echoing from somewhere in the middle of the system. But it was deff not coming from the engine or anywhere in the FRONT of the car

Other than the back firing it does show symptoms of fuel system problems. Like the others have said start at the filter then try cleaning the TB. May as well put a tune up on it also and see if that helps. Good luck
