KBB/NADA Book Values

I read one member's distrust of these resources for pricing pre-owned Jeeps. I'm wondering if anyone has any other suggestions.

I'm looking to spend between $10-15k for a 2005-2007 Wrangler. Several dealers in my area have them, but I understand the used car market is hot.

Thanks!

Those publications are just a guide. Market demand sets prices so what price you see today may go up or down depending on the sales of that model that week. I used to work in the fleet department of a major car rental corporation and we sold 150-175,000 cars a year so prices are very important to us.

Have cash-in-hand and buy from a private party.

The used dealer market is flooded with Wranglers that were bought/sold at auction...many of them have lots of roadsalt rust from a life in the rust belt, so be careful.

I run a small family dealership in Belton, Texas, and a nice TJ with anything cool on it will bring right at about NADA Retail around here. (Central Texas) It is not uncommon, however, for us to PAY nearly NADA Retail for a really Sharp TJ. Especially the 02-04s because they don't have very big book values.
I dont deal much in the JKs so cant help you there.
Where are you located?

In SW Missouri. which includes North West Arkansas, and SW to Tulsa & Oklahoma City I can tell you that clean, average or low mile TJ's go for above the NADA/Blue books. Especially a Rubicon or an LJ. Modded or customized examples are optimistically priced, but seem to remain for sale for quite a long time.

I beleive the price guides are only that. A guide that is impossible to factor in the supply/demand equation.

In our area they sell quick and sell for a good price. Often at they get full NADA retail value for them. Particularly if the miles are a bit lower than average.

IVEGOTJEEPS, I am located in Northern NJ.

Dextreme, I've always bought private party/cash for used vehicles, however at this dollar amount, I figure I would have some recourse when buying from a dealer.

Any of you dealer folks disagree?

There's one Wrangler that's been listed a few weeks now; I probably would have some leverage there -assuming its not junk :whistling

If I was looking for a TJ I would be looking in the southwest. I purchased mine new in Tucson and it lived many of it's first years in AZ. To have one without rust and one that the fastners actually can be removed would be worth the travel.

I live in Connecticut. I began shopping for a 2000-2006 TJ (any sub model) in January of 2012. I used every used car website out there, plus Craiglist and ebay. I reviewed maybe 500 plus ads in a 150 mile radius (CT, MA, RI, NH, NY....huge market!) and actually went out and test drove/inspected over a dozen Wranglers. I spent 7 intense months shopping every day for a used 2000-2006 Wrangler.

My observations? Not one well cared for, one-owner, unmodified Wrangler in excellent condition was ever advertised at or below NADA/KBB. The only ones w/ asking prices near KBB/NADA were beaten up, high mileage Wranglers. And you cannot tell from looking at an ad, you have to go and see the vehicle to get the true story.

I made numerous offers for decent Wranglers at 5% ABOVE NADA and the sellers would not budge on price. I ended up having to pay about 8% above high NADA retail for a mint condition one-owner low mileage Sahara.

So be careful of assuming that you will get a nice Wrangler at NADA/KBB and do not feel bad about paying a tad more for a really nice example. Took me 7 months, if I had to find another one I bet it would take another 7 months.
