In the state of PA it is illegal to drive without doors on. PA law states that if your vehicle came equipped from the factory with doors on then by law you are required to keep them on. That said most cops don't care or know. I put some mirrors on to draw less attention to that face.

Yep...

Try to get an inspection without the doors on in PA. Guaranteed to fail assuming the inspector knows about this.

Glad I dont live in PA cause there are more than a few conflicting laws. Truth is that if you dont do do anything stupid that requires the police to get involved then usually they will leave it alone.

The doors are NOT required for the vehicle code. Now, to pass inspection you are required to have SOMETHING in the door frame. Really depends on the inspection mechanic. The Jeep is designed with NO ROOF, and that clause means that you CAN drive without the doors on. And the fact that the doors are NOT safety equipment, and only for use against the elements.

My family are all inspection mechanics and know both the inspection and vehicle code, as well as police officers in the family. The only thing that can be done is a cop with a power trip thinking he's the be-all end-all of the law when they are nothing more than on a power trip. I've driven across this country with doors off, cops checking behind me while off the side of the road and making sure everything is ok (putting soft doors on the jeep to protect me from the elements when surprise storms pop up) and they say NOTHING about it. They see it, they know it, and they don't do anything. It's the tiny crap-towns that are power-trip morons that are stopping people without the doors. And those cops, sorry, shouldn't have a stinking job.

MOST they can do is give you a faulty equipment "ticket" where you just have to show up at an inspection mechanic, or the police station, and show that the "repair" is made. Been there, done that, and it was NOTHING more than a tube frame of a shreaded soft 1/2 door. After he looked at it, I requested to speak with the chief, and then had the cop ripped into because they were stupid. After that, I proceeded to take the frames off, throw them in the back of the jeep, and drive away topless & doorless.

Has anyone been pulled over in NJ WITH mirrors but no doors? There are some pretty "tough" cops in the shore towns. Curious what the cops said and if a summons was issued.

I have a question about the mirror relocation brackets. If you use them to relocate the mirrors, do you have to put them back to re hang the doors? In other words, do they interfere with allowing the front doors to open?

I have 03 Tj with the relocation bracket I don't have any issue with that the bracket will set your mirrors out about 1.5-2in away from the A-pillar so there's enough room to take your doors on/off but i do recommend a kit thy comes with new straps that are shorter if you have the stock straps on your doors still when you open the door all the way you will hit the mirror

Thanks!

I suspected as much, the relocated mirrors would "bump" the front doors if they are opened all the way...

Nope (have never been there), and I am not too sure how they could properly site you unless it is blanketed in some local ordinance or catch-all statute. The only pertaining statute I can find is Title 39:3-71, which states you must have mirrors, but allows only 2 (drivers and windshield) assuming clear visibility to the rear.

I can find no State law requiring doors in NJ.

I also went the long stem Harley route: couldn't be happier (as VA requires me to have both sides since I have tinted glass).

You can twist the check straps up to shorten them.

Don't do it on a JK, as the JK check strap has wires in it.

I just got my jeep inspected in NC with no top or doors on and passed. I did however have a Harley Davidson mirror for the drivers side. In NC you need the drivers side mirror and the rear view. Never had an issue with the state, or local police in the G-Boro, High Point or Winston Salem.

.
Toss a pair of operating door handles in the back.
Tell them that the handles work fine,, when installed.

here in Ontario ive never had a problem as long as you have 1 rear facing mirror. since I don't have a rear-view any more I picked up a bike mirror for like 2 bucks. it works great. slide in in the hinge and put the nut on the bottom. takes 20 seconds to do, its fully adjustable and it fits in the pocket of the door when the doors are on

The federal law that has been discussed is the same law that has been used in California to write citations for changing front and rear bumpers... I was cited a few years ago for having really nice pre-runner bumpers on my Frontier. The bumpers I had built offered MUCH more protection than the single steel bar, foam and plastic that the stock bumper offered. BUT, it was still illegal. I paid the ticket, put the stock ones back on, waited a few months and swapped them back out. But I am a rebel that way...
