Lifetime Warranty: Rip off or Good Deal?

Hey All,

I'm going to pull the trigger on a 2011 Sahara this Thursday. The last item I need to decide on is whether or not to go for an extended warranty. I tend to keep cars a long time (15-20 years), so, if I go with an extended warranty it will be the lifetime warranty for about $2,300.

Does anyone have any experience with this warranty product? Is it a solid deal, or, do they "fine print you" when you try to use it?

Thanks!

Chuck

What happens to your warrenty if you modd your jeep?

From the research I did online and the replies to this post...it seems like modds will not void the entire warranty, but, will probably void your ability to make a claim on the modified components and those components "related" to the modified component. With that in mind...I am now thinking I may go with a Rubicon so there will not be many modification needed. This way more stuff will remain under warranty.

Thanks for the head's up...

I think some of those offers are assuming that ownership will change within the 5-8 years that people own cars for these days. It makes me feel better knowing that I've had my '00 TJ for its whole liftetime and have no intentions of getting myself into another car payment. If I had a lifetime warranty, I wouldn't have had to pay for a new radiator, starter, driveshave, U-joint, and lower rear control arms. They didn't add up to $2,300 but it would be close and I'm sure I'd get to that amount eventually.

Yea, but that warranty would have taken the pleasure from you of wrenching

Just read the fine print in the extended warranty before you fork over the cash. For instance, I know it says you have to have the vehicle inspected at a dealer every five years or you're out of luck. One day past five, sorry. I have a feeling when you do that they'll tell you you need a bunch of stuff not covered. In my opinion, not worth it. Especially nowadays, Chrysler has a pretty good factory warranty. And I just read places like Best Buy make most of their profit selling extended warranties. I know, they don't sell cars, just sayin'...

I purchased the chrysler extended warranty for my Jeep and it was one of the worst investments I have made so far. Don't get me wrong, if you never intend to modify your Jeep then it might be okay for you. I did have an axle seal replaced for $100.00 but a couple of weeks ago I learned that my bumper to bumper warranty does not cover certain components such as a shifter cable 300.00 for that one and I would have changed it myself had I known that it wasn't going to be covered. Apparently to determine exactly what is covered on a "bumper to bumper" warranty, you run a chalk line between the 2 and snap it. Any components that are in direct line with it are covered. Just make sure that you know exactly what you are getting for your money.

As posted above, the extended warranties are money makers for the stealerships and automakers. Too many exclusions, loopholes and outs; read the FINE print closely. Don't ask me how I know... :flipoff:

FWIW, the only extended warranty that ever worked for me was the one I got on a front-load washer 10+ years ago. I didn't buy the plan when I first got the washer, I got it after the first couple of repairs for the plastic door latch/lock that kept breaking... :banghead: When it was offered via mail I bought it for a year, and it paid for the repairs. I've maintained that plan ever since and it's paid for every repair, every time. In 2009 the plan delivered a BRAND NEW washer when the repairman condemned the original machine. For once, it has been money well spent. :D

YMMV,

The 07-10's had the lifetime powertrain warranty standard. They did away with it on the 2011's and so on. I had the warranty on my 08, which I no longer have, and you must get all HIGH DOLLAR maintenance done at the dealership. It gives you peace of mind thats all. When it came standard it was nice but in no way shape or form would I pay for the option!

There is a court case that I have booked marked on my computer. Can't give you the link but its called magnuson moss warranty. Basically you can modify you vehicle and not void your warranty. The modification has to be a direct result of the problem otherwise the warranty will cover the mishap no matter what the dealership says.
