THanks Matt
Those are just the different trim packages that have made it in over the years. Unless you see one that you absolutely like then I wouldn't let these affect your decision.

I am not positive, but I believe all Rio Grandes are 4 cylinder.

All Saharas have the 6.

Other than that, I really don't know.

I agree with 1BLKJP. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

i see, so they dont offer that much more than a sport would?
I will have to search for pics of the various trim levels.
Also does the appearance of the dash change between 90-96?

Same dash as far as I know...

Get out there and start looking and test driving. That's your best bet. Find something specific you like, and we'll be able to offer better help from there.

looking at pics from cardomain.com it seems the 90-95s are damn near the same. so i should just be looking for no rust a good motor, and good body/interior.

Man just go out and look at some in person. I was in the same boat as you a couple years ago. I had no idea except that I wanted a wrangler. My budget was 5 grand and I started looking in the auto trader and bargin grinder. I looked at about 10 jeeps in the 3800-5000 buck range. Most were pretty terrible (mickey mouse repairs; mods, bad paint, lots of rust, crappy looking interiors, no other tops etc).

So I humbled myself by thinking "this is what I get for 5 grand? Last two I looked at one was already sold and other one was for 5 and still for sale. I went and looked at it and when I pulled up to his house I saw it in the driveway and said "self, this can't be the one for sale". Well it was. 94 YJ completely stock, excellent paint other than the normal rust at the bottom of the windshield and a small hole in the LF fender just below the "Jeep" logo. Imaculate clean interior, 2.5, no leaks anywhere, hard and soft tops, nice aluminum rims, well taken care of.

Took a year and built it up myself fairly cheap (bumpers, rear carrier and trail rack, rock rails, 4" lift, 31's, and the usual cb, nice racing type seats, on board air and welder

I'm a licenced auto tech so I kinda know a little more of what to look for, but before I bought this jeep
i really never paid attention to them at work that much. Now that I own TWO now (a cherokee x-mass present to the wife that she didn't know she wanted) I love them. Reliable, rebuildable, and modifiable, and a wrangler...just plain fun.

The saying "It's a Jeep thing, you wouldn't understand" is completely true. You really don't untill you own one. But the other saying is even more true "Just Empty Every Pocket" The latter is true unless you want to drive a completly stock jeep (which you won't, or shouldn't

You can tell you are in 4WD on pavement. Just take off from a stop and you should be able to feel the difference. Also do some tight turns in a parking lot or something at a relatively low speed and you can feel the front wheels pulling.

Don't worry about the dealer. I used to be one and I liked it when people drove the vehicles like they were intended.

Just do your homework, like you are doing here. Let them know that your not an idiot and you know what you are talking about. I'd bring some paperwork with you from Kbb or Edmunds.com for the year that you are looking at. NEVER Pay full price. You should be able to knock a grand off the price of just about any used vehicle that is selling for more that 5 grand or so.

Well, today I test drove a 2004 Wrangler Sport.
Fisrt off it was yellow, so imediately it didnt have a chance.

it had the v6 and it was auto. the auto really felt pretty stong comepared to the v6 n my truck. I tried the 4wd, in 4-high, it felt a little weaker but generally if your in 4wd i would assume you wouldnt be going all too fast anyways so i kept it under 35. I tried the 4-low and i could really notice the a difference in how the jeep felt. Obviously called low fr a reason.

The jeep had a soft top, and frankly the top didn't really match in a couple spots. Mainly around the doors. it was fine on slower roads, but noisy on the highway.

everything else seemed fine. not much space in the back. I would probbaly take out the rear seat anyways. Or at least keep it folded. The verdicy, the guy wasnted 20k for it. i laughed cuase that seemd a bit too high. it only had 17k miles. I told him they probably paid 10-12 for it it and i wouldnt even consider it. He rebuttled with I will pay you alot more your truck is worth, and give you a great deal on it. So i in turn replied, Its missing a hard top. his manager replied, we will get you a hard top if you get it today. I said "sold" JK i told them i wouldn't pay more then 10k for a jeep, and to call me when they had another.

To conclude the jeep felt nice. I like the style of it,so maybe a 97 is in my future. I will try to post a link to the jeeps i test drive. and as always thanks for you imput guys.

Lates Matt

If I offend anyone, I apologize.

Matt, in my opinion, I say again, IN MY OPINION, hardtops look ridiculous. I think you'd be surprised as to how happy you could be with the softtop.

I would only want a hardtop for the late fall, winter, and early spring. besides that I would have a soft top on. i would much rather buy a new soft top than a new hard top.

Thanks for the offer jeeptexas, but I would never buy a jeep i couldn't see in person. I will hopefully go look at another jeep or two, and i watch the football games tomorrow.

My prediction Steelers vs. Panthers.

Man do they have that thing greased up. I wouldn't buy it because it is too shiny. As far as the hard top thing...I hate mine. I'd trade it for a soft top in a minute.

How is the weather where your at Daddyjeep?
I plan on rain every day, except for mid june-august

anyone have any idea, about and olympic edition wrangler. I saw one not too long ago. had the USA olympic logo on it, it was gold. looked good. I have been seeing alot of Saharas lately,

I am kinda thinking of getting an 87-92 then i could care less about looks and get going on the performance. when did they start fuel infection. around 91. I also read something about a different rol bar between 91 and 92 any ideas on this. Thanks.

my

I have the best of both worlds: soft & hard top. Our first Jeep has the soft.....nothing quite like driving topless. The Rubicon has a hard top and is less noisy on the road. Personal preference and how you'll be using the Jeep should determine your choice.

My choice: turn up the music and let the wind blow my hair

BTW, heats nice & toasty in winter

i used to have a pair of 10's in a box i made behind my rear seat. there was no way it was getting stolen if the tailgate was locked. but i've added a shelf in the back in lieu of the seat.

it's a wooden sheld covered with old canvas. i supported it down the center so the under-shelf storage is two compartments. it's bolted to the roll cage so it's sturdy as a mo-fo. i'll get a pic up as soon as i can.

I found a 94 with the 4clynder around 135k miles,
while soft top, for 2g's but its about an 8-10 hour drive
away. seems a bit far to go look at a jeep.
I am still looking though.
