Looking for a used Wrangler. Could use some guidance...

Hi all,

I bought a '97 Sport when they came out. Had it for a little while then sold it. I had a company car and didn't drive it much and decided to cut the expense.

I'm now looking for another one. I'd prefer a '97 so I can have real A/C but would consider an earlier model due to my budget. I'm limited to spending $5-6K. I've seen a couple here on CL in my budget range. One says it needs the A/C coil replaced. Is that expensive?

I'd appreciate any thoughts or suggestions you could give me. I called a place in Houston that solely specializes in Jeeps. They said to expect to pay ~$8K for a '97 Sport.

While I prefer to get a I-6, is a 4 cyl. that bad? I work for an airline so it will mainly be used to go to and from the airport once a week and just to run errands when my wife is at work. We have kids so they'll be riding along at times too.

So far my preferences are: Full doors, post '97 and a 6 cyl.

Thanks for your help!

The 4 banger lacks power on the highway. I'm unsure about the AC Coil pack. And the 8k for a TJ sport is about right, you might be able to talk someone down some. Do you plan to lift it or add larger tires?

The 2.4 liter I4 in the later TJs doesn't seem to get much mention, but at 150hp it doesn't sound like a slouch. Regardless, either the 2.5 or 2.4 sounds ideal for quick trips to the store and work.

I just bought what was probably distress-sale TJ X, a 2006 with 71k miles for $11.8k. $8k seems OK for an I6 '97, possibly a tad high unless its really clean with lower miles. Good deals can be found out there with a little patience.

Is there anything wrong with a '94? Looking at ad for one locally. It's a 4cyl, 33" tires. My biggest concern with the older ones is lack of air in a really hot environment.
