looking for advise on a jeep purchase...

My wife and I are thinking about buying a jeep. We have a friend with a 99 with a 4.0 and a stick shift. Thats the setup we would like. What should I be looking for? Are their certain years to avoid? Are there common rust issues or mechanical problems? I like to monkey around with things and wouldnt be afraid of converting to a small block chevy if it turns into a toy. We go the the silver lake sand dunes a few times a year but would mainly use the jeep as fun transportation. Any help or advise would be appreciated!

The TJ's are great jeeps - In Michigan where they salt the roads for the 11 months of winter rust is a problem - key areas are on the frame where the factory steps mount up & on the front portion of the tub just in front of the door & if it wasn't undercoated look at the floors too.

The 4.0 is bullet proof & can easily go 250k miles with just regular oil changes - & of course a 5 speed should last longer than an automatic just by its nature. The 5 speed however isn't the strongest transmission & they have a tendency to break if you treat them rough.

As far as mechanical problems with the TJ there aren't many major issues in stock form. You will find weeknesses if you intend to do hard core wheeling - but as a driver they are pretty darn solid.

The only years to avoid are the YJ's - but mostly because they have square headlights & simply are not as well designed & built as the TJ.

Does it have a hard top? Some people don't realize how noisy soft tops are until they have lost 20 DB's of hearing.

Oh - welcome to the forum - if these guys can't answer your questions - the answer doesn't exist.
