Looking for Wrangler, which to buy?

Hey guys. My name is Joe. I am getting into the market to get a Wrangler Unlimted 4 door here in the next year or so, so I wanted to register and ask some questions so I am happiest with my purchase.

Biggest thing I want to know is which model to get. Of course from the outside looking in a Rubicon seems the way to go. Will handle more than I really want to throw at it, but have it if I need/want it. But I am a VW/Audi technician. Would I be better off buying a base ol' Sport and building it up over time? My end plan is really just to have a totally customized Jeep (lift, wheels tires, body mods, etc) that will handle what I want to throw at it. Just wondering if I could have a JK sport better than a Rubi for the almost $10k in price difference.

I have also heard that if i plan to keep it for a while (I do plan on this being the last vehicle I buy) then I want to get a manual trans and go for 07-11 before they but the new 3.6L in them. What are you guys thoughts? What should the new guy buy?

Lasty, if anybody has any other advice that i didn't ask about please go ahead and give it. Like I said. I want to not regret (not that I REALLY could anyways) what I get. I have no issues humbling myself and saying I don't know enough about these great vehicles yet to make a 100% informed decision and will gladly take all advice.

Welcome to the forum.

Unless you plan on a lot of heavy rockcrawling, the rubicon is overkill for most people.
Save the money and mod it yourself for what you need/want.

If you plan on customizing and build it up, then go with the Sport. As far as transmissions, go with whatever you prefer driving. The debate over auto vs. stick has been going on ever since they put an auto in the jeep. I would go with the 3.6 motor. It gives you better mpg and more horsepower over the 3.8.

Yea it wont be a lot of rock crawling. Maybe later. But not at the start of it. Im not too worried about MPG or HP either. If I wanted MPG I wouldn't get a Jeep. And HP is manageable with mods. Im more worried about dependability. Of course it's just what I have heard of the 3.6 being less dependable. But if lots of you guys have them without any issues ill just go for whatever I can get for the best price. I work at a dealership so we can locate me a Jeep and get it from here. Ill probably stick with manual just to keep cost down. Hoping to be able to get me a white Jeep and do lots of black accents. Make it match my toolbox.

if you are going with the 3.6, get the auto unless you absolutely have to have a manual. The manual is serviceable (I have one) but it really isn't a great unit. Look at the threads on here; there are a lot of people who prefer manuals, they just don't like the ones in the new Jeeps.

So I found an 07 JKU automatic with 130k on it for 14k. My wife and I are going to try and get time to go look at it. Anything I need to keep an eye out for?
