Looking to upgrade - TJ, LJ, or JK??

I cant make up my mind and would like to hear from other Jeeper's what might have / had both.

I have a 99 S.E. 5 speed. I got it with the purpose of being a weekend warrior woods beater. Then I "got" the Jeep thing, now its almost my primary driver.

So now I'm looking for "more" Jeep instead of upgrading my 99. I'd love to have a LJ Rubi. But one of my buddies has a 08 Rubi Ultd, and his wife has a 08 Sahara Ultd. I really like having the ability to haul 4-5 adults around, place for a cooler, and the dog. We havent done any real Hard Core wheeling in the JK's that make me have to have one, yet.

I do see potential for the JK to be a better trail rig than a TJ/LJ. Or am I just blinded by shiney new things?

If you like tjs get a lj more room, towing capacity is higher, and they ride better. If you need even more room go for a jk. My lj has plenty of room for me, and they are somewhat rare.

To me -and maybe I am wrong-first there was Lp's that replaced Victrola, than stereo, than 8 tracks, than cassette, than cd, than sattellitte, than MP's, now more storage on mp's-I probably don't know enough to know, there is even something newer out there.

Bottom line things get better/improve/if you wait too long the JKUs may be the cd's of today-but do you want to, "keep up with the Joneses" or want a JKU 'cause it is what you want/need for your Jeep pursuits? Nothing wrong with either choice-free country. Jeep is a sickness, treated best with more mods and fresh air.

Happy Wheeling!!

You've been blinded. The tj/lj are better offroad. The line 6 is bulletproof. Where the minivan engine of the jk is...from a minivan. The sheetmetal is paper thin, and the plastic body parts are asking to get shredded. Get an LJ rubi if you can, its cheaper than a jk. And it is THE holy Grail of all jeeps. I'd do unspeakable things to own one. Not that I don't love the he'll out of my 04 rubicon (which also has plenty of room for MY needs)

I was on the cusp of doing un-speakable acts for a +5 Long Arm, 35" tire, two tops, low mileage 05 Rubi LJ that was "Perfect" other than a salvage title. The reason for the salvage was unknown. I think the was price was in my wheel house too, unfortunately it lost the coin toss and I passed on the deal.

I'm not real sure about having a rig with that much tire. I have 31's on my TJ and no lift. It works for me. I like living with it day to day, easy in/out. Not much rock pounding to do in this area where it would get used.

You can stay with 32" tires and you won't have any trouble-unless you like to drive in MUD only !!

Speaking of blinded.... there's an awful lot of misinformation there, but okay.

WHY???

All you have is a biased opinion to throw out there. I own both.. a TJ and a JK. Although I love my TJ to death, I have to admit the JK comes much better prepared and much better equipped, and in stock form is much more capable than a stock TJ.

2004 JEEP RUBICON SWEET!!

I licked the door handle of this Rubi today, and left a Deposit. I just need to figure out the particulars. Generally when you see Craigs list ads the pics look way better than the vehichle actually is, definately not the case with this one. I doubt it has even been down a dirt road, let alone off road. Only knock is it will need tires, and there is no power to the compass in the mirror.

I neeed to decide if I really want to sell my 2003 VW Jetta TDI Wagen, that gets 50 mpg on a bad day, for a Rubi that will get 15mpg on a good day... Did I mention the Rubi is red??

IDK-couple niggling little things in my mind-have an '04 sport-and the stance looks very similar to mine when mine was stock-maybe paranoid-but thought Rubi's sit higher from the factory than the rest? Second thing and could easily be me not knowing as much as I think I do-power door locks? On an 04 with 1/2 doors? And 2wd? And trip computer? Is it a salvage title? Seems the seller doesn't know what they are talking about - or someone didn't proofread the add very well? Check that it has the lockers and they work!! Just sayin'-saw a post this week of a "rebadged" Sport/Rubi now maybe to skeptical.

Good Luck!!!

Good eye jp, but she's all Rubi. It has over size tires, 265's and no lift so the wheel wells kind of look stuffed. Flares are Rubicon, as are the lockers.

The power locks are legit too. It has a nice Viper alarm, with keyless entry, back door lock is wired up too.

That whole paragraph about 2wd, trip computer, ect. Is computer generated from their web site. I didn't take that part too seriously.

Lolz. Ok.

Seriously go out and bang on the front panel of your tj then your jk. Tell me what's stronger. Then look at all the plastic around the edges and see which one has more. Then open up and tell me if you don't have a chrysler v6. As of 06-09 everything o said Is true. Did I say the jk wasn't capable? No. Did I say the tj is built tougher? Yes am I right? Run a couple tests and tell me. Btw I work weekends at a used jeep dealership alot of people come sell us they're jku's because it "doesn't feel like a real jeep" and that's out of others mouths.

I dont think a plastic grill or a plastic fender or bumper has much to do with capability. Size or displacement or arrangement of pistons don't have anything to do with capability either. A lot of really good 4x4 vehicles out there that have tiny little 4 cylinders or V6's.
Look I'm not gonna sit here and argue about whats better...its a never ending battle, we both know that. I just dont like when people will come on posting about how something is better than the other when all they have is a biased opinion.

As far as "running a couple tests"...I did, Last year at Rausch Creek...I had a stock JKU Rubicon with a budget boost...running blue and black trails. Leading the trail for my buddy in his 03 TJ with 3.5 RE lift and 35" mud terrains.
Next time someone comes in and returns a JK because they say it doesnt "feel like a real jeep" ask them if they ever actually took it offroad and pushed the vehicle to its limits. Ask them what does a "real jeep" feel like.

Be a little more optimistic in life...you would be surprised...

Trust me. I'd drive the shet out of a jk. They ARE capable. And your right this guy didn't ask what your opinion on my opinion of what a jk is or isn't. So in the spirit of argument touché. But as the old people say, they just don't build em like they used to.

You def were there...things are good. Waiting to get the JK out on the trails again and trying to save money to get the TJ the way I want it. You were there Barrie when I made the decision I was absolutely keeping the TJ...we were cooking burgers at the picnic table...and I said "sell the TJ?...F that!" lmao

Just look around for some JKUs and some LJ Rubis that meet the standards you want, then make the decesion from YOUR experience. If you like the idea of four seats and a heck of a lot of room go for the JKU, if you like the two door look and still want space then go for the LJ. If I had to do it all over again I would be going for the LJ. The next jeep i get thought, after college and all, will be the JKU without any question at all. The room they offer is just awesome...and theres just something about the rear of that roll bar on the JKU and LJ that I can't seem to get over.
