Manual shifting: always this loose?

I've driven stick shifts my entire adult life, but not since an old Chevy pickup truck with 3 on the column have I hated the feel of a manual transmission as much as I have since I've been test-driving TJs.

Is it a natural consequence of the long stick that it feels so loose? I'm accustomed to very tight, very short throws on small cars, and I find the Wrangler most unpleasant.

Do you get used to it over time? Are all Jeeps/SUVs/trucks this way?

I really want a 2004-06 Unlimited (quite tricky to find, incidentally), but I'm tempted to go with an automatic transmission, which I never ever thought I'd say.

I was used to short and tight throw as well, but yes just after a few days I got accustomed to it, and even now loving it.

The vehicles we have are equipped with basically truck transmissions. They were not meant to speed shift, the distance from the transmission to the knob with the longer lever makes for a long travel between gears. There are short throw shifters available check with your local speed shop or 4x4 shop.

Thanks for the feedback. Going to be hard to let go of my lead foot, but given the gas mileage, probably a good thing.

If you're already comparing a wrangler to a sports car and unhappy with the feel, you're going to regret buying one...

As the very happy new owner of an LJ Rubicon, I can safely say something was wrong with the LJ I originally took for a test drive. Night and day difference in shifting.

Thanks for the feedback.

Pure, dumb luck. And the color I wanted too, just a few miles away. The Jeep gods were smiling on me.

I also hated the school bus shifting of my 99 TJ. My best advice to you is to go ahead and buy a B&M Short-shifter for your rig. I bought one last year and could not be happier. About a third shorter throws between shifts and brings a more mechanical crispness to the shifts.

They don't appear to have one for my model, unfortunately. No matter, pretty happy with this one.
