manual transmission question

My first jeep was a '79 CJ5 with a 3 speed manual. Second jeep was a 2000 TJ with 5 speed manual. Next week, I'll be purchasing my 3rd jeep which is a 2006 TJ with a 6 speed manual. Why all the extra gears in those different year models ?

a really simple way to put it, more gears = higher speed at lower rpm

OK, so between the 2000 w/5 speed I had and the upcoming 2006 w/6 speed , 1st gear will be the same ratio in both, meaning the 2006 will not be a low gear (granny low) in 1st ?

i guess not, i get the feeling that granny gears rnt to popular any more, and im pretty sure the 6 speed came from mercedes. probably taller gearing in the higher gears for better highway cruising.

As you can see below, you have BETTER first gear gearing with the 6 speed and a much better (IMO) set of ratios overall with the 6.

NV 3550 Gear Ratios:
First Gear 4.01
Second Gear 2.33
Third Gear 1.39
Fourth Gear 1.00
Fifth Gear 0.78
Reverse 3.57

NSG370 Gear Ratios:
1st - 4.46
2nd - 2.61
3rd - 1.72
4th - 1.25
5th - 1
6th - .84
Reverse - 4.06

I have a 2006 6spd, I don't do much highway driving so i RARELY use 6th gear, it's pretty worthless unless your on a flat stretch of highway. Here in Vermont even If I do drive the highway it's still pretty useless because there's no flat stretches it's all up and down hills on the highway. With that said, I love having the 6 spd for wheeling purposes because that transmission has more low end than the 5 spd. and like said above the gear ratios are better overall. If you live in Nebraska 6th gear would be nice and prob save you some gas but not here....
