Marthas Vineyard

Just wanted to see if anyone is on the Vineyard in the summers? I was thinking about getting a beach pass for my Jeep this summer but wanted to see if its worth it or not. I just bought the 98 in December, but it was a family Jeep that was only used on island in the summer and my grandparents didnt want to get the sticker for it. Now that it is mine I am considering it. I appreciate your input. Thanks

DO IT!

Been sailing up there from VA fior 25 years-finally got a mooring in Edgarown

Beats the summer heat on the mainland

Lots of places to do your thing-Chappquiddick, Cape Pogue Resevation, various beaches, etc--will not have a problem finding your way to do your thing

Even hostiles you can stay at for Cheap

Lots of Jeeps up there/many of which are driven by tourists

It's just a good time road traveling on the twisting/hilly roads with your top down

Go for it -it will become a destination for the future Im sure

Good to know. I dont have to worry about a place to stay, we have a house over there. I just wasnt sure if the beach pass was worth it. I've taken it on south beach a few times but i always get booted by the summer rent-a-cops because i dont have a sticker and i guess your not allowed at night. Where is your mooring in the harbor? Have you been having any difficulty with the current since katama bay broke through?

Not far from Ernie Bachs house on the Edgartown side

Yes re the current-was running around 5+ knots few years back-boats had tendency to slam into mooring balls and crack fiberglass-issue now resolved with different mooring bridle-plus one of breaches closed-not as bad last year-

Thinking of bringing my jeep up this summer and leaving it there-havea place I could rent to park it? where? also have small boston whaler would like to bring up

Any boats yourself?

location?

You can email me off the forum since we're getting out of their territory unless some may be mnotivated to give the Vineyard a try

Unfortunatly it's not my house its my grandparents so i cant rent you a space. but there are a lot of places you can park your Jeep where they dont ticket, one plave that comes to mind is the middle school right outside of town. as long as you drive it every once and a while and dont mind the walk from the yacht club launch I think you would be ok. WE have a 17 mako we keep at the marina and a tender at the house. unless I am around and then I like to keep the mako at the house so I dont have to drive the car into town. The house is in Majors cove down the street from Farm Neck. I dont have to many pictures on my work computer but the first one is from the deck looking towards Felix Neck, and the other is towards the state beach but you cant really see it. sailing up from VA must be a lot of fun as long as the weather is nice, and you get to wake up to a great view every morning.

I just did some more reasearch and saw that a Chappy Over-Sand Permit is $180. Not sure that is worth it.

My family used to take a week long vacation to MV every summer. MY dad used to have a Toyota Tundra and he would buy the Chappy Over-Sand Permit just for the week. IMO it is a great thing to do even if it is not a long time. That wouldn't be the case for you because you have a house there so I would say yes, it's so worth it.

Unfortuantly due to work i dont get to spend the whole summer over there. I do weekend trips here and there and about 10 days in August. When you say he bought it for the week do you mean a whole season pass and used it just for the week, or they have 1 week passes available and I missed them during my search? for $180 i can get 2 tanks of gas in the boat and take that to chappy and back all week, I just thought it would be fun to take a new route.

We just got back from the Vineyard and spent 2 weeks oversand on Cape Poge, which has about 14 miles of beach and sand roads to ride. It has a nice long trip to the lighthouse and when I was there about 80% of the beach road was open too. (Conditions and access can change weekly.) Part of the beach road was closed for nesting birds. We think it was worth the $180 even for one week. you can get yourself out to the end of Chappy, drop your chairs and towels and the closest people to you are 100 yards away. You can't do that on Cape! The pass also gives you a membership to the Trustees and access to other areas including Long Point Beach which is great. No oversand area, but a beautiful beach with a salt pond. $5 to park for members. Non-members pay $10 to park AND $5 a person. Enjoy it!

Gald you had a good trip! Cape Pogue is such a cool spot, I do a lot of wakeboarding and scurfing over there. I'm bringing my buddy with me so i will have to see if he is interested in splitting the cost with me, which means i will prob have to let him drive a few times. Do they do day passes at all, or just the season?

Im headed over on the late boat tonight and today is crawling by, why cant the market close already so i can make my way over there!!

Unfortunately they only do yearly passes. You should be able to get a pass at the guard shack right over the Dike Bridge.

Just a thought, unless your buddy is paying for his stay at your grandparents house, or paying for the boat trip over, I say he pays the whole $180! LMAO!

Here's a couple of pics as a teaser for you. Enjoy!

Damn, Jeep looks awesome, love the smoked rims. Once summer is over i am going to redfinish mine that color. I am going to take the doors completly off for the first time in its life tomorrow morning, hopefully they dont give me a hard time about my lack of mirrors on the island.
He is splitting the cost of getting my jeep over on the boat. Luckily lodging is free and so are the toys. I love driving on the beach, just have to decide if i'd rather have the extra cash for putting gas in the boat and cocktails in my stomach.

Thanks, those rims are from the Mountain package. I love the color and it really hides brake dust too.

This was the first time I took the doors off too. Nobody hassled me about mirrors, but I stayed right on Chappy. Everytime we hit the "Big" island we put them back on because of the kids.

Just remember, Jeeps don't wave on the Vineyard. I think half the Jeeps on the island are rentals and the other half think YOU are a rental!

It is pretty nuts how many jeeps are over there. It is prob also one of the highest concentrations of D-90's as well. You would get tired just trying to wave to everyone.

I will try riding without mirrors during the day, but at night (especially after being at the shanty & the warf) i will prob put the doors back on as i dont need to give a cop an excuse to pull me over.

chappy is beautiful, my favorite house on the island is in chappy on katama bay. do you get to the island every year?

I saw more big SUVs on the beach than any other vehicles. Tahoes Suburbans, Expeditions etc, but only 2 or 3 other Jeeps and maybe 1 or 2 Land Rovers.

We've been going every year since 1999. The last two years we've rented the same house on Chappy, a small 2 bedroom cape. Before that we rented several different houses in Katama and West Tisbury. Last year was the first year we got an oversand pass for my wife's Subaru Outback. We liked it so much that it was the driving force for getting the Jeep last fall. Not sure if you went to Wasque last year, but more than half of what was there last year is now gone.

I got over there on the 4th of July weather was beautiful. it is crazy what has been happening out there, it is like there is a river running through the harbor at 5+ knots. sadly i was coming through the cut on my boat when the guy drowned.

Jeezus, I was there from June 26th to July 8th and never heard about this. The Chappy side of Norton Point Beach was our favorite beach. We drove on it last year, but now it's completely closed to vehicle traffic. Even the road that put you on the beach there is gone. That guy who has the house there is about a year or two away from waterfront property!

Yeah it was pretty crazy, as I was coming through the cut another boat had pulled him in and the rescue boat had just got there. A guy on the beach flagged me down and asked me to drive over and ask the EMT's the name of the man as his friend was missing. I then had to tell him it was his friend and then drove him out there. It really puts everything into perspective when something like that happens. As much fun as the ocean is it is also very dangerous
