Matching front & rear axle ratios?

OK. . .stupid question!


I'm new to modifying 4WD's. . .I haven't messed with axle gears in a 4WD before so I figured I'd better ask just to make sure I know.



Do your front and rear axle ratios need to match?



If they don't, what would be the advantage/disadvantage of this?

Yes they need to match, if they dont match your front and rear wheels will turn at different speeds and damage your transfer case. I have seen mud boggers and sand draggers use different ratios in the axles, but they would correct it buy running different size tires.

That's what I thought.

I just wanted to double check. . .I haven't done much messing around with 4WD's before so. . .better safe than sorry. . .you never know.

The mud boggers and sand draggers can keep their different sized wheels. . .that would look DUMB on a Willy's P/U!!!

Not if it was slammed with a blown big block running in sand drags.

True. . .not what we have in mind though.

We're going for a jacked up WWII look. . .inspired by the Dodge Power Wagon off of Gearz TV show (minus the Rockwell axles. . .at least for now!!!).
