mini spool question

so whats the cons to these? i can get a d44 mini spool for $48. back in the day you had open diffs, limited slips, and lockers, that was it. now there's so many traction devices i can't keep up.

is there any wearable parts here to worry about, its so simple it looks kinda appealing for a quick trail rig, not my yj build.

i understand what it is, and what it will do, but are there any down sides other than if its on the road.

I would think as long as your carrier is in good condition it should be fine. At the same time I have always liked the full spool as would seem stronger.

ya, and not that i care, cuz i can set up gears, but there's no gears to set, a spool has to be set up, and spools are still a few hundred right?

Depends on the axle.. dana 44's spools run from say 130-200 depending who makes them etc.

A mini spool acts exactly like a full spool does except it goes in the stock open carrier.

Driving with one on the street will definitely wear your tires out infinitely faster than with any other traction device and your axle is locked in 100% of the time.

ya, so the only downside to a mini spool is the same as a spool, street performance, is that it.

and the strength factor. the factory carrier could crack whereas a full spool isnt likely to. unless you just abuse the hell out of it or are running some serious hp though, i would put it in the not likely category (the carrier cracking that is)

fwiw, my buddy just got a full spool for his 44 for ~120 iirc.

the only reason he went full spool was he had to get a new carrier anyway b/c of a gear change.

the only other thing I can think you might have to do is shave some of the end of your long side shaft to get everything to fit right in the mini-spool.
