My custom fab bumper and side steps

When I got my Jeep back in the spring I had a few things on my upgrade list.
1. Get it lifted so I added a 2.5" Old Man Emu which ended up lifting about 3 1/2" inches.
2. Had to get side rails to make it easier for my wife and daughter to get in.
3. Replace the stock bumpers.
4. Other things but not important in this thread.

Well after pricing different bumpers and side rails I decided that being a Mechanical Designer by trade maybe I could draw something up. I ended up doing my first welding and metal fabrication and came up with the design below. Materials used were 6x8.2# channel, 2" & 3" s/40 pipe, & 3/16" plate.

Original design was done in AutoCAD in 3D. Although I changed several things from original when I actually started the fabricating. Only the side rails stayed almost like the design. I added the rounded corners on both ends and upward flares on the front when I saw how it was going to look during layout stage. Took a lot more fab and weld time but I like the rounded edges.

cool...did you just model the bumpers only or have a model of a jeep to see what it looked like? I use Solidworks mostly but used AutoCAD for years.

I would not mind seeing some more details pics of the side rails and if you don't mind sharing the drawing that would be great :-)

How much did you spend on materials?

what year is yours? I have a '95.

I can send the AutoCad file to you if you want. We also use Coade (Pipe/steel design) also which let me model in the steel and was able to give me some weights of what I had. (Rails 35# each; Front bumper 100#; rear bumper/carrier 120#) I measured my frame and modeled some general body stuff in to get a idea which is why the bumpers got modified some due to not all details shown.

Work had materials at scrap price of 10 cents per pound. Also some materials I had or was given so my cost was minimal.

Mine is an 89 so I think the frame design would be the same and rails design could work.

Here are a few more pictures I just took.
