My Dilemma

Ok, so I have verbally agreed to trade in my patriot for an 07 Sahara, and I am suppose to take delivery on monday. The Sahara has 129,000 KM on it and they are asking $13,800 for it, with 9 grand on my trade. I received a call from another dealer today and they have an 05 Wrangler unlimited with 77,000 KM on it for 12,999. One has higher KM but is newer, while the other is older with lower KM. What would you guys do? I am kinda leaning towards the Sahara just for looks, but the 05 is already lifted and has new mudders on it. The dealer claims it was not offroad but they all say that.

I would go with the j/k. unless you don't want 4 doors

Yea I am fine with 4 doors and would prefer it since I need the trunk space for moving. Also, I know the 3.8 is a pig but I heard the 4.0 is even worse.

Just to throw it out there, that 05 unlimited is colloquially referred to as an LJ, and they are fairly hot commodities.

Also, do you know for sure that the LJ has a 4.0? If it has a 2.5, I'd stay away, but that's just me. The 4.0 will last 300k miles if you take care of it.

Do you know what model the 05 is? Is it also a sahara?

If you want to know for sure if the LJ has been offroaded or not, take a peek underneath at the axles and skid plates and look for scratches/scrapes/gashes.

The 07 will have better fuel economy and two additional doors.

So...guess I'm leaning toward the LJ

I know for sure it is a 4.0L, but am unsure if it is a Sahara. The thing that sketched me out is when I went to the dealer today the 05 was on the hoist and when I went back there we asked if we could take it out for a drive and the guys were like "ohh not a chance she needs some work". I asked the sales rep and he said they had to put a whole new exhaust assembly under it, as well as typical things like oil changes etc. BUT he said if the exhaust repair is pricey he will have to change the sticker price which seems a little off that they put a price on the jeep then decided it needed work...

The 07 dealer I have had a good experience with, super nice guys and it seems to be a clean jeep. I just keep looking at that 05 and it still sparks alot of interest. When I go there on Monday I will look at the skid plate for sure thanks JKralph

For sure! I really like those LJ's, but that situation does seem a little sketchy. Keep us updated when you learn more

I love LJ's but that may be a good situation to be real skeptical about, jacking up the price once he reeled you in. A close look at the under side will tell you right quick if it was wheeled hard or not. I would fully expect a Jeep owner to take a rig off road but wouldn't one that was abused. Look for scratches, bent skid plates and mud in the frame rails. Car salesmen lie like cheap rugs.

Seems like you need to decide if you want the tried and true TJ/LJ platform with an awesome engine and more of a classic Jeep feel or more creature comforts and room of the JKU.

You got some bad information regarding the 4.0L. It's a great engine, most would regard it as superior for a Jeep than the minivan motor in the JKU.

If you plan to modify for the trail, the LJ is an easier platform to do that.

Sounds like the better jeep is at the worse dealer

Buy a few YJs instead

Thanks for the information everyone. It is a tough choice between the "tried and true" LJ 4.0 and the newer refined JK. I guess I just heard the 4L was a pig with gas, but I'm guessing the Jk isnt much better, and anyone buying a jeep isnt looking for hybrid like economy. I will go and look at the LJ tomorrow and look for everything mentioned (mud, scratches, bent plates etc.). I don't plan to do serious offroading, however if I got the JKU I would put a 3 or 4 inch lift on it and some bigger tires.

My choice would be the LJ hands down. The 4.0 is a legend.

Test drive both. Only you can make the final decision. I think you'll be happy with either.

Do you want something that you need to be a computer engineer on the side to work on? Or do you want a vehicle that can be worked on easily by anyone with half a brain?

Don't know about you, but I don't like so many electronics controlling me. There is just too much to go wrong. Go with the LJ.

Going to test drive the LJ in a half hour...I am truly torn between the two. The LJ will cost me less and has half the KM basically in comparison to the JK, but it is a bit older. I guess the test drive will help me decide.

Why are you limiting yourself to just these two vehicles from a dealer? Sell that Patriot outright and with cash in hand and a pre-bank Approval...buy from a private party whose Wrangler was their baby.

Well after 4 hours at the dealership this is what I walked away with lol Completely different than both of my previous choices. The LJ was beat to shit under body, rust, interior etc. And I just couldn't see myself paying for a vehicle thats a year older and has more mileage than my patriot. I got a really good deal on this baby with my trade in value. I got him to throw in these rims free (wanted $3500) and a discount on the hitch I am getting installed tomorrow at the dealer. Let me know what you think of her...

yeah that's totally opposite from what you were considering before, you got a brand new sport! I like the white with the dark wheels. Do you have 3.21's or 3.73's? Lsd in the rear? dual tops? just curious

How do you like that pentastar?

Oh, Mr Fancy with his fancy new Jeep... lol, j/k man.

That thing looks pretty sweet, congrats. Good catch on the undercarriage, too. Always check em good!

I'm sure you've got miles and miles to share with the new gal.

Haha she's pretty basic no power options so I dont know about fancy! But yea it feels nice to have a new Jeep. The Pentastar is amazing so far, only has 115 km on it but I really like the power it has and the acceleration super smooth getting on the highway. I have to look into the gears tomorrow, I am not too sure. I was a little worried about those tires being rough on road but they aren't at all, really quiet and good over bumps.

Also, I don't have the soft top yet. Going to see if I can find space for it before I buy one. My jeep came with the original rims and tires too so I have a lot to store already!
