Hi all, my winch failed last week, but it all worked out pretty good.
I was trying to pull a small tree that fell into my back yard (in the far back of 2 acres I mow) out of the woods and was in the lawn where I mow. It fell back in the spring but I just mowed around it, and I just got tired of looking at it.
Well, I started to pull it out, it was getting close to the Jeep, so I tried to let some line out so I could back up a little, and no line would go out. Then I found no line would go in either but the motor was running.
After I yanked it out with a tow strap, I moved it by hand, so it probably weighed less than 300 lbs, so it wasn't the tree.
Only had the winch about 9 months, and it worked fine the six or seven times I used it before, so I called Engo. Joel from Engo could not have been nicer or more helpful. He told me step by step what to do, (pull winch, take off cover, look for metal shavings, etc). And asked me for some pics. It turned out that the spring inside the drum had popped out and was now sheared and jammed inside the drum.
Joel sent me a new drum (with new steel line, BONUS, now I have a backup in case my synthetic breaks, just need a roller fairlead) and a new redesigned keyway for the motor side of the drum.
I then put the keyway in wrong (totally my fault, I had the diagram of how to install it right in front of me, DOH!), and the winch still would not turn. After calling Joel at Engo again I pulled the winch again and put the keyway in right, which made it work like it should.
Just wanted to let everybody know of another company out there that backs up their products and also has great customer service.
I went from freaking out and thinking I broke my winch to a practically new, redesigned winch in less than a week. Thanks Joel.
