My first wrangler, help a noob

Hey folks, I've decided to jump head first into off-roading, since it's pretty much the best thing ever, and settled on buying a Jeep wrangler.

I want to get a good starter vehicle, not something all tricked out, just something that wont be disappointing.

My question is, what engine should I shoot for? I have buddies who swear by the inline 6, but that has cost implications. I've also heard that a 4in lift and 33in tires are the way to go.

Any thoughts? I've done some searching, but with minimal luck.

I love my I6. But my dad has the I4 and that little thing is a beast. The only place that thing lacks is on the highway when you're trying to get up to speed. You can't really go wrong. As for the tires and lift. I have about 3 and a half inches of lift. Shackles and a body lift and I'm running 32X11.50's and I have no problem on the trails. I want to bump up to 33's. Its all in personal preference. And Welcome to WF BTW!!!

Any engine will work properly if geared the right way. If you want a 4 inch lift you will need to spend more money on other drive line mods just to make that work correctly. If you want 33 inch tires with a 5 speed six cylinder engine you will need to re gear to 4.56 gears. If you want 33 inch tires on a 4 cylinder engine with a 5 speed you will want 4.88 gears. If you never drive on highways at high speeds then a 4 cylinder will be fine as long as it is geared properly. You may not want to jump head first with out doing some home work first. I recommend finding a Jeep that is pretty much stock and go from there. You can find a lot of Jeeps all tricked out the wrong way.

Not knowing how much $$$ you spend on a jeep- I would do a 05-06 Rubi. I had a 06 LJ Rubi for 6 yrs and all I did to it was a 4'' lift & 33's. Before going to the JK I have now , the 4.0 had some 86K miles on it and never gave me any problems.
