Mystery Oil Leak...

OK, you guys are gonna think I'm nuts... Well, you all already do.

Here's the deal. I'm posting this in "General" because it pertains to the XJ.

99 XJ 4.0 to be exact. Running 6 quarts of Valvoline 10w30 and a Napa filter.

So I changed the oil the weekend I got the Jeep. It's about due again for an oil change. The damned thing leaks a little oil. I figured, hell it's a 4.0, if it didn't leak oil out the main, I'd be worried.

Heres where it gets freaky. I've had to clean the driveway a few times. It leaves sometimes just one quarter sized spot and sometimes the spot is the size of a tennis ball. But it hasn't dropped any oil off of either the oil or trans dipstick. Nothing. The oil level has been on the top of the "safe" line since I changed the oil.

Oh, and it's not residual oil running off the block from when I changed it either. I've cleaned it up and watched it and I can't see the rear main leaking, I can't see the valve cover leaking...

What gives? Any ideas?

Thanks

Ah yes,the perplexing unknown oil dribble. She is testing you Cain, there has to be residue from where its dropping from, you just haven't spied it yet. After years of welding,I don't see as well as the younger daze,I will wait till its dark and crawl under mine with a led lite and usually have good luck locating the "wet spot"Course this is with my glasses to the end of my nose and my hat turned almost sideways.I have no doubt you will locate the source of your drippies.

Oh man... You guys!

You can't make this stuff up!

I about shot Mountain Dew all over my lap top!

But... You guys want to know something else that weird? Sometimes, for a few days here and there, it doesn't leak at all. Bone dry under the Jeep. Then, after a short or long drive, doesn't matter which, I'll end up with a drip.

How did you know I have a drippy rear end?

It's those damned pills! I should have never asked the doctor if the pills were right for me. I would rather still have stuffy nose!!!

Ok I lied-heres my comment.I guess it DEPENDS on the amount of leakage.I hope soon you can STAY FREE of those little drippy leaks.

Sell it, only losers and poor soccer moms drive XJs...

I say clean it all up as best you can, drive it around for like 10 mins then get under there with some paper towels an start dabbing. Its worked for me before but who knows.

The engine bay of XJs are so packed in its hard to find anything in there. Not wide open like Wranglers

My 99 xj does the same thing. I switched over to synthetic a couple of changes ago, and have noticed it since. I can't find it either, and the dipstick still shows full. I think I will go back to dino and see if it still leaks.

Hey ccain check up at your distributor. Our wrangler was doing the same thing. Drove me nuts! Found that it was coming out of the weep hole on the distributor. Found that pcv was not working correctly, intermittantly thus raising the crank case pressure. Here and there.
