Need help choosing between a new standard soft top or frameless soft top

I am having to replace my original soft top that came on my 2000 Jeep Wrangler Tj and was wondering what I should go with. Should I replace it with a standard soft top like came on the jeep or should I get the frameless? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

jmho, and i own neither yet (mine came with harddtop, i'm gonna buy a soft soon),

but for some darn reason the stock softtops on TJ's just look better to me, and i wish they didn't, because logically i can't see any reason to have this complicated thin frame tube apparatus in there when jeeps have full rollbar setups already; it just doesn't make senseto me and seems to add hassle,

so i'm totally gonna buy a softtop that just uses the existing rollbars,
i think one several forumites pointed out is by besttop.

Try the Rampage frameless top. A buddy JUST got his last week and we installed it on Saturday. It's awesome. No bows. Fits perfectly on the factory cage. The quality of materials and the fit is top notch. He paid a little extra and got the sailcloth material, and I would suggest doing the same. If I was in the market for a soft top, I wouldn't look at anything else, IMO.

Here's the link in case you're interested in checking them out.

I just bought the Rampage frameless soft top, Rampage Windshield Channel, and the Rampage Tailgate Channel with Tonneou (can't remember how to spell it) cover. Impressions... I love it and love the "sporty" look of it! I never had the OEM soft top mounted nor have I ever been in a Jeep with the OEM soft top(original owner included, a bikini top, OEM soft top, and hard top... ended up selling it to help fund the frameless top). The two most selling points for the Rampage was the window storage up top and the fact it can be converted to a bikini top (at the moment it takes me 5-10 minutes to take the windows off and about 10-15 minutes to put everything back on)... oh and the price fit my budget. If you do get the Rampage... a. install it during warm, sunny weather b. having 2-3 buddies help you put it on makes it quite easy to install c. let it form to your frame... it's getting easier as you take it on and off, but the first couple of times are a pain d. make sure the foam pieces are folded length wise in half and put snug against the windshield e. lastly, my buddy who has the same top showed me an easier way to put it on (once the bikini top is on, put all three windows together, start zipping, and then put the bottom in the channel instead of putting the bottom in first and then zipping everything together). Sound wise... from what I'm told it's ten times quieter than the OEM soft top (but like I said I never had the OEM soft top), but I can't confirm that. It's only a smidge louder than the hard top in my mind, but it's not bad at all. Hope that helps!

Cliff notes: I would recommend the Rampage Frameless!

I'm cavediverjc's buddy that he helped with the Rampage. I love it so far. Easy to install and I love having all the windows with me at all times. That was the biggest selling point for me. I definitely agree with "The Korean", put it on during a warm day. It will need to form to your roll bar. I went ahead and put the whole thing on so all the windows could kinda stretch to fit. Rolling just bikini now and it doesn't flap at all, even on the highway. I bought mine from They had a huge sale going on and if you subscribe to their email list you get an additional $20 or $40 off, depending on what your total comes to. Anyway, good luck man. Hope this helped with your decision.

Anyone have recommendations for a JKU? Do they make a decent frameless?

I've been told that if you have a TJ with the factory soft top and header you don't need the windshield channel for the Rampage frameless top. Is this true and if so do you have to remove the header from the factory soft top and install it on the frameless?

if/when i need to replace my OEM softop im going with a frameless. i like the fact that they easily covert to a bikini type top and just look better to me overall. plus they are supposedly quieter than the OEM
