need help deciding what exhaust to buy.

Hey guys, newbie here. I recently bought my first 1999 TJ, it has the 4 banger in it and i need to replace the entire exhaust system. I have been looking into many different types, but can't figure out which one will get me the results i am after. I know i can't get much more performance with a new system due to having the 4 banger, so i am mainly looking for the deepest tone possible. So far my local shop has me leaning towards a flowmaster muffler, but that may be just because that's what THEY carry. Also, will a high flow cat do anything to improve performance, MPG ???? I read the high flow cat will hurt my low end torque , is that true??? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

flowmaster is a good muffler and will make it SOUND better, but it is restrictive in general. if you want a free flowing muffler go with a magnaflow.

yes, a high flow cat will make your engine not work as hard which means more MPG and performance.

I just installed a Walker QuietFlow SS muffler and 2.25" tailpipe on mine. The muffler is stainless and has a lifetime warranty and only cost $99 at O'Reilly's. It has a very mellow tone at idle and doesn't drone at all on the highway. I'm VERY happy with it.

The Flowmaster and Dynomax exhausts seem to drone too much on the road. They sound great at idle but get a little irritating if you actually drive your Jeep for any length of time. It may not bother you at all, but it bothers the crap outta me. Of the 4 guys here in Salina that I hang out with (who own Jeeps), 3 of them have aftermarket exhausts (Flowmaster/Dynomax), and all 3 of them complain of how much they drone on the road. After riding in their Jeeps numerous times, I decided there was no way I'd get either brand of exhaust.

I'm not bashing the exhausts or the people who run them (remember 3 of my close friends run them), I'm just saying they're not for me. If you don't do a bunch of on-road driving or if the droning doesn't bother you, go for it! They DO sound good at idle, I'll admit that.

-EDIT- All of the aforementioned Jeeps are running the 4.0L straight sixes, so that might make a difference in the droning issues. Your 4-banger might be better with an aftermarket exhaust than ours with the 4.0L

I got flowmaster put on my wrangler after I had it on my grand and I cannot stand it on my tj. Sounds like crap going down the highway. Idle sounds amazing. I will be getting it changed either this summer or next. I can stand it for a little while longer seeing as I do t drive it everyday. But it is very irritating.

I don't understand why it sounded so different t on my grand. Must have been the length of travel from the muffler. I don't have a clue..
