Need help with 4wd shift issue

I just bought a 93 Wrangler yesterday. Had it checked out by a professional mechanic before I bought it. Took it home and noticed the following issue:

When the 4wd shifter is in the 2wd position, the 4wd light remains lit on the dash. Furthermore, when excellerating from a stop in 1st gear, there is a "knocking" sound from the rear and near or complete stall. None of this happened on the test drive nor was noticed by the mechanic.

However, when the 4wd shifter is in the 4wd position, the jeep excellerates from a stop in 1st gear just fine with no abnormal noises.

This jeep has 77K orig miles verified, with a professionally done 4" lift.

Anyone know what might be going on here?

Not sure on your 93 ... but on TJ's there is a link that needs adjusting after a BL. Might want to crawl under it and check how it works while someone moves the lever. That noise might be because TC is not engaging completely.

I second the shift linkage. It sounds like you are not getting it to shift all the way out of 4wd. Loosen the bolt in the picture manually shift the case into 4wd and then tighten the bolt.
