Need help with testing 4 wheel drive

I need help I am going crazy. I have no dash lights telling me if 4 wheel drive is engaged. All my other gauge lights work I dont know if my 4 wheel drive is working. Is there a way I can test the 4 wheel without running the jeep. Also is there another sensor that tells the lights on the dash to turn on? I did replace the bulbs and checked the gauge fuse. It is driving me nuts

You could jack the jeep up on blocks and test the 4wd

Or with the jeep not running,e brake on.
Put the jeep in 4wd
jack up one front tire only off the ground and try to spin that tire thats in the air.
If that tire cant spin the the 4wd is working or you have a front locker thats locked.

If you spin that tire and the front driveshaft spins 4wd isnt engaged

Check the 4wd shift linkage to make sure its connected.

The funnest way to test is to go find a mud hole to spin tires in,If the front is throwing mud in the air.....its working

The easiest way I've found to test the 4wd if the light doesn't work is simply to put the jeep in 4wd and on dry pavement turn the wheel sharply and go slow. If the jeep bucks and binds you know that the 4wd is working properly. If the 4wd is working but the light still wont go on and you've checked the dash light and the fuse then its most likely the 4wd position indicator sensor thats screwed into the transfer case. It's an easy fix, all you need is a new indicator and a socket wrench. I don't have a picture of it but someone else here might have one. If not you can look it up online.

Pjt a large zip tie around your front drive shaft and dont cut off the tail. You will hear if it is in 4wd....

What year? My 97 will run a cluster diagnostic if I turn the key on while holding the trip meter reset.

You could just find a dirt/gravel road somewhere, and give it a little gas... if you feel it in the steering wheel, you know you're working front and rear.

Don't run the thing if you jack it up! If you have lockers or posi, it'll drive right off the jack!

Mud and a gas pedal will usually do the trick too. Just get someone to watch or set up a video cam. Just remember that unless you have lockers, it's not true 4WD, one tire per axle will usually get power, the other wont. That stops you from sliding all over the road when it's wet. When you go around a corner, the outside wheel has to make more revolutions than the inside. That's why they stopped making solid axles decades ago.

My jeep does the same thing. I put in 4wd but the light does not turn on. But when I put in 4wd and try turn slow in the parking lot, it starts to buckle. I though something was wrong, but I just got my answer. Thanks everyone.
