New and thinking about buying a Wrangler

Hi All,

I am new and have been thinking about buying a Wrangler. To give you some background, I am from CT, so it will see it's fair share of snow. It will be a secondary vehicle. I have an 03 4 cylinder, 5 speed, Chevy S-10 that will get most of the commuting miles put on it. The Wrangler will get occasional commute duty and I need to put a car seat in it occasionally. It will see some milder trails, and I do not really plan on going crazy with lifts, and larger tires (not planning on going over 33s). With that said, I like the idea of the Rubicon with front and rear lockers and D44's as the drivetrain is stout. I have done all the maintenance to my vehicles, and plan to going forward.

I should also say, the less complex in my eyes the better, I don't even want to consider power windows and locks, and not having the bogus tire pressure monitoring system and fancy electronics is a plus.

I've been thinking of 3 possible options:

1) New JK Rubicon - it's nice, I like the idea of the locking differentials, but the cons are the 3.8 and it's very complex as far as more things to potentially fail (computer, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System is a PITA, etc) and how can I forget, it's the most expensive option.

2) 05-06 Rubicon - pro-s the 4.0L, and a 6 speed, con's the cam and oil pump problems.

3) 03-04 Rubicon - 4.0, stronger 5 speed, Honestly, I can't think of many con's other than it's older.

So my question is what would you choose given my criteria?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

There are a couple 03-06 Rubi's floating around in Connecticut and surrounding areas for 12-15k.. Thats what I would look into.. JK Rubi's are twice that cost.. Of course if you got really deep pockets then I guess it doesn't really matter.. Also, I haven't heard of any problems on the 05-06 with the cam or oil pump

Well ,how much do you want to spend? The JKs cost more. And I do believe they are a bit better. Try to find one with low mileage if possible.

Well let me put it this way, I could pay cash if I can find a TJ Rubicon around the 15K mark.

A JK Rubicon will need to be financed.

Regarding the 05 and 06 4.0L's aren't there issues regarding the oil pumps? The gear that powers the oil pump has been known to fail?

I haven't herd anything about that yet.. maybe others have but I spend a ton of time on Jeep and 4x4 forums and have never read that specific problem.. Of course maybe my memory isn't what it use to be..

Check here to find the rubi's in your area.. there are a few floating around with in a hundred mile radius of Hartford AutoTempest - Find your next car... Faster.
