New - Is yellow manly?

Hey All,

Jeep newbie here - sort of.

First vehicle with an enclosed cab I ever learned to drive was a Jeep CJ5 in the mid 60s - tractors before that. I was about 10 or 11 and working all the pedals and gearshifts. 2 and 4wd. Yeah farm/ranch kid.

Now almost 50 years later thinking maybe I need a return to those roots.

Drove a yellow of all things 2009 Wrangler X with soft top today. I quite liked it but so much bigger than the CJ5 I recall. I even didn't mind the yellow but wonder if is really a manly color? Maybe I'm getting in touch with my feminine side? Do real men drive yellow?

Anyway I am not new to 4wd - been in natural resources all my life - from those early CJ5 experiences to jeep pickups in the late 70s - Any of you ever have to literally put a fire out under a jeep pickup in tall grass on a regular basis because of the exhaust frame relationship? I been there done that. Every time you get out you smell the air and look under your truck. I've driven most kinds of 4wds in real 4wd conditions over the years as a part of work or my own 90 3/4 ton 4wd cummins diesel dodge to my xterra.

I'm keeping my Dodge forever but thinking on trading in the X as part payment on the Wrangler. The X is one of the greatest vehicles ever - I just don't need the size anymore (kids are grown) and looking for a change and paying homage in a way to a grandfather who taught me to drive.

I'm not "set" on this jeep but am pretty set on getting one.

Any advice? On jeeps in general? Tops? Ones to avoid? Anything? Can I expect a jeep to be as "tight" and dependable as an X in 10 years like mine still is now?

Assuming I do buy I'll likely be around here a fair bit.

-Ed-

Welcome to the forum! First off, yes, yellow is still a manly jeep. I actually love yellow jeeps and really wanted one but I couldn't find the right one. They look best when modified, either slightly or hardcore. Even a set of rims and tires make it look that much "manlier".

As far as tightness in 10 years, it'll probably be about as tight as your X, maybe a bit looser. The difference is with a JK you can currently pick up a new set of springs and shocks for about $150 so if they wear out they are cheap to replace. And if you really build it up big you'll replace the suspension parts with stuff that is much stronger than the X.

Like you said the jk is much bigger and heavier than the CJ-5 but its still a wrangler and a ton of fun.

Sorry, but the answer is No.

As proof, here are some other things that are yellow, and also not manly:

Personally I would say it is only not manly if it bothers you.
If you like it then who cares what the other dweebs think?

If yellow isn't a 'masculine' color, then someone better tell Case, Caterpillar, Komatsu, Terex, Volvo, Hitachi, and a number of other earth-mover manufacturers.

Nothing wrong with yellow.
There's one in our Tioga group

I almost bought a yellow LJ in 2007.
I looked at a blue 05 and a yellow 06 at the same dealer. I decided on the yellow, IF they fixed a problem.
The dealer was supposed to have it fixed before I picked it up. I called on the morning of the scheduled pick up and the repair hadn't been started. I told them to prep the blue one instead and I'd pick it up at noon.
Bottom line, color just wasn't a major decision point for me on a used rig.

Get the yellow if you like it, make it your own with what you add: bumpers, wheels/tires, trim, graphics, whatever makes it feel like YOURS.

Get it if you like. Yellow is great. Sadly do not see enough of them.

Not every car can pull of yellow, but the wrangler can.

I wanted a Yellow Jeep but couldn't find a decent used one at all. If Gecko or Mango Tango can be manly so can yellow. I agree with mhicanders though, if color of your vehicle determines you manliness, well you have other issues. Buy what makes you happy, don't care what others think.

Catapillar Yellow

I painted my tow hooks and GraBars Catapillar yellow. Wanted something different than red tow hooks.

When I was young there was a TV series about a county sheriff, I think in New Mexico. He drove a yellow CJ-5 and I thought that was the coolest Jeep I had ever seen. So, yes at least to me, yellow is a manly Jeep color.

In the mean time, I just like to say . . .

Any Jeep Wrangler color is Manly, IMHO. Even Pink, if its a Wrangler. Wranglers just reek bad arse, in any color. If its pink, you know the woman is bad arse. Yellow is a good color for a sensitive male in a Wrangler Jeep. A yellow Wrangler says that you are rough and sensitive, so you project the best of both worlds. This is different than a Yellow Hummer. Any color Hummer makes me physically sick. But, a black Hummer is "almost" tolerable.

These were my only options for me. Something about being LOUD!

Now, is yellow manly? Works for me, but I don't care what others think and why should you?

If you're honestly concerned with whether or not you are "manly", then the answer is no. If you had the confidence in your masculinity / sexuality / presence then you wouldn't have to ask. Good rule of thumb to keep in mind - if you have to ask for reassurance or confirmation of your self-worth, you have none.

You can't argue with the truth even if it is hard to hear sometimes.
