New or Used

All:

New to the forum and I would love some advice. I am in the process of buying a JKU and I am torn between a couple:

- 2010 Sahara - automatic with tow package and 17k miles
- 2012 Sport - manual with tow package brand new

I can get either one as the price on both is basically the same, but I don't really know how much of a difference there is between the two years of build, and the trim levels. I already own a manual so that is not an issue for me.

Thanks,
Mitch

Me, personally I would NEVER buy a Wrangler used. You just never know what they did to it. The 2012 engine has more HP and better pick up and go. I believe Sahara will have bigger gears if you plan on getting bigger tires. All depends on what you use your Jeep for.

I have a 2012 Sport auto....love it. It's my DD and I'm mall crawler. I did upgrade my tires to 33'.

Do what makes you happy but I don't trust others to not have beatin the sh*t out of the wrangler for those 17K miles. Brand new and you know everything is perfect...or should be. IMO

Exactly what iluvshoes said. Plus if you're going to have it for a while the new one can have an unlimited bumper to bumper warranty. Mine was $2,200, plus finance rate was less on new and 2011+ has a much nicer interior.

"Me, personally I would NEVER buy a Wrangler used."

I'd go with the manual 2012, new 3.6 engine vs the 3.8 of years past. Nothing against used jeeps (i bought a used 2010 sport manual), but the 2010 auto is underpowered IMO, especially if you put larger tires on it.

Think what you want but its not a great secret that most Jeep owners are hard on their Jeeps. While Jeeps are made to be tough there are many people who dont know a limits of a car and when something breaks or mods nit everyone does it right. Me personally, my Jeep is my only ride so no, I dont want to risk getting a Jeep someone beat the piss out of and did DIY projects half ass. Unless I knew the complete history of the Jeep, I wont buy used.

Seems like I post this once a week: my wife and I just bought a 2010 Islander Unlimited with 9k miles for $26k. 1. I like the 2010 interior better- seems more Jeep-like and spacious to me. 2. With the features we got, new (of course, no new Islander package, but generally) would have been $35k or so and we still would've had to add stuff. 3. We get 21+ mpg, which is as good as what I'm hearing from '12 owners. 4. 3.8 has pretty much been time-tested. Everyone knows about them, whereas the new engine seems to leave questions- aluminum longevity, ticking issue, etc.

In the end, we saved money, got what we wanted, and won't pay the initial "drive-off-the-lot" depreciation. Oh, and we got 1.75% financing.

Thanks for the feedback all. I think I saw it on this forum, but I always thought you don't pick your jeep, it picks you. Once we get the deal we are happy with I will post some pics.

Nothing wrong with buying used....so long as you get a thorough INDEPENDANT inspection and you go into it with the willingness to walk out of it if you dont like the results of the inspection.

THere are some awesome things about the '12. Love mine.

But I also loved my '03

Depends largely on what you want..and what you can afford.

Fortunately you are in a position where a USED '12 is becoming a possibility. Best of both worlds...Someone else already swallowed the horrendous depreciation for the "new" vehicle purchase...AND you get all the upgrades...AND its still under warranty.

SWEEEEEEEET

But few folks are willing to part with their Wranglers after just a year...so selection will be limited.

On the other hand...the market is getting lots and lots of "older" JK's so options abound.

If you are financing, get pre-approved WITH A CREDIT UNION!!! Come up with a comfortable REALISTIC budget. THEN decide what you want...within the parameters of when you can reliably afford. Nothing worse than having a neifty new buggy...that you cant afford to take anywhere.

You don't know what you're missing. That's half the fun right there.
I have never bought a Wrangler or any other Jeep new.

What I paid for the last five used still don't add up to a new one.

Agreed. And I love it when stuff breaks because I get to put new, better parts on!

And people keep mentioning the warranties as a reason to buy new. But doesn't that mean you can't do any serious upgrades? Or you will void the warranty? Sorry but that just sounds like a horrible idea to me.

I think if I was at all handy or knew how to do anything on my Jeep, I may agree with you. Hell, I just learned how to change my oil about a month ago. But I NEED a depenable DD and since Jeep is my only, I need it to be in the best shape possible. My Jeep isn't a toy for me like most. Maybe it is because I'm a girl and was never around gear heads...who knows. I don't think however, my opinions are "dumb" or "stupid" as others have put it. It's what I feel comfortable with, within my ablities and talents and can afford.

I boughtmy 2010 JKU Sport 2nd hand and love it. That being said, if I was able to get a 2012 at roughly the same price, I would snap up the new one.

Warranty means alot to me as I have very limited mechanical abilitiies and money can at times be tight.

Go with what your gut says and piques your interest. You won't be be disappointed, either way.

Don't agree. There are a lot of people who buy the Jeep for the look. Used car lots have more unmodded jeeps than lifted / upgraded ones. Really few Jeep owners push them, majority want a snow/beach vehicle.

Buying a used Jeep is easier than buying a used car. You can check the under carriage without putting it up on a lift.

Maybe it's just the people I know who owns 4x4 trucks and Jeeps. They seem to be SUPER hard on them (maybe stupid is a better word...lol). And most DIY projects they do are...well not that great.

I bought mine used & have never had a problem with it. It wasn't abused or driven into the ground & you can tell what it has been treated like generally by the condition of the paintwork & upholstery. One that has been looked after on the outside & the interior is not dirty ,ripped or trashed usually will mean the previous owner has kept up with the oil changes & services. If it is scratched, dinted & has a lot of signs of wear & tear, smells bad & hasn't been taken care of then it may have never had an oil change. Yes it is a risk but so is buying a new one by the sound of all the complaints on here. In my opinion as soon as a brand new one is driven off the lot it loses value & I would rather put that into mods.
Up to you Mitch & depends if you like power everything with the Sahara because apart from that I believe the sport & Sahara have the same diffs, TC...correct me if I am wrong

Good thread

A lot of good points. I bought my 92 used and never had any issues. 01 was bought new, stripped done bone stock and never had money to mod it. So last July I bought my 07 Rubicon preowned. Even had a little bit of warranty left.
The comment that gets me is "why by used when new can be bought for the same price" ? Yea..... If I wanted a stripped down sport with 3.21's again. (nothing against stripped down sports with 3.21's btw)
So I saved 10k plus on a 07 rubicon in Beautiful condition. 5k for the Tj so my payments are Low
Besides, most mod these things anyhow, so any money I spend to repair is considered an upgrade to me. Drives great and burns no oil. Did have to replace the balljoints/TRE's but I did it my self for cheap.

Nothing against preowned, just do your homework, have it looked at If you need to.

I love my antique minivan driven 07

If you're not mechanically inclined I would definitely go with something with a warranty. As for used Jeeps being beat up, I don't think that's realistic. Lots of them are DD
