New Product Research-Input wanted!

Hey my name is Collin and I am an intern at Max-Bilt. For those of you that dont know what Max-Bilt is, it is a Wisconsin company that specializes in secure storage solutions for Jeeps and other off-road vehicles. We are currently working on several exciting new products, and thats where you come in. Instead of just asking friends and family for feedback, we decided we would go strait to you, the user, and get your opinion on the stuff were doing. That way we can build the products you want to use. There are 3 main areas we are currently looking at. Please read the descriptions and the questions and leave your feedback.

Trunk storage system
Max-Bilt is currently working on prototypes for a multi-part trunk and under seat storage system for Jeep CJs and Wranglers. The system is composed of two main components: a drawer and 2 storage cubbies.
Would you be willing to mount your seat on top of the storage drawers?
What do you carry in your vehicle at all times, not just on the trail?

Tailgate storage
Max-Bilt is always looking for new area to make storage for jeeps, and when we thought of this one, we knew were on to a good thing. The basic idea is a locking toolbox that mounts to the inside of the tailgate. It is removable so you can take it out to move it to where you are working on repairs, or if you need to put a large object in the trunk.
Do you mount your tire to your tailgate?
What sort of tools would you put in it?
Would you use something like this in a pickup bed?
Would you mount this other places on the inside of a vehicle if there was space?

Roll bar storage
A rarely utilized potential storage location is the roll bar. We are working to create usable storage and toolboxes that can be mounted to roll bars of any sort of vehicle.
Do you currently have mounted to your roll bars? If so, what?
If you had a toolbox mounted to the roll bar would you want to be able to access of the tools with the box still attached? Or would you remove it to access your tools anyway?
If your vehicle has a top, how often is the top on?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!

DUDE! Where have you been all my Jeep life ??

We took the back seat out of our 98 for the dog. I've been looking for a storage box for either the passenger side over the wheel well or a box that attaches to the tail gate but still leaving room for the dog. Doesn't have to be that big. I could trial 1 or both for you, that's the kinda guy I am .

I might use a trunk type storage system. Maybe. Not sure I would want to mount a seat to one. Good luck.

I have a sub box behind my back seat, so I have no trunk space. It was like that when I got the jeep. I need to put everything under a platform type thing and take the back seat out.

I like the idea of rollbar storage, especially since I have no space in the back. My top would stay down most of the spring, summer, and fall. I would probably just take the toolbox off the roll bar to get something out. All I have on my roll bar now is a POS speaker bar

I'd opt to use wheel well boxes as well since I carry dogs too. I'd be concerned bolting my seat to a box, however the extra seat height may be a bonus. I could see the extra unused space behind/under the front seats being transformed into a lockable trunk type system to keep small stuff secure. I'd also be concerned about the extra weight of a tool box attached to the tailgate since I run with the spare on the gate. I can't picture viable storage on my roll bar past whats already fastened there (Hi-Lift, Fire extinguisher, and Mag Light).

I would go for under front seat storage. I could use a 2" seat lift I'm only 5'8"

Underseat storage is a viable product to me. I don't normally carry anything other then cds and chargers in my jeep for obvious reasons. I run my soft top year round.

Rear tailgate - would never consider it as my oversized spare already puts a little extra strain on it.

Roll Bar - again would not consider it. I work in the sportscar racing industry and one valuable lesson learned is that you want as little over your head as possible in the event of a rollover. I also feel that the exposure from the roll bar would be an incentive to theives to slash my top.

granted extra storage is always a plus, but if running a soft top you do not want to "advertise" that you are carrying anything of value.

Lockable storage under the front seats would be great. There is a few inches under the rear seat that can be good for some type of storage. I keep a my tow strap and a small shovel under there now.

Great feedback so far everyone!

Here are a few pics of the mockup box we made for the tailgate, now it is to decide if the size needs to be adjusted for the subwoofer!

Its a toolbox, that locks up securely and there is a double lip on the inside seam where the door folds up with a gasket to shed water. The box, once opened will be able to quickly be detached from its mounting hardware and removed from the tailgate, to take your tookls to whatever area of the jeep you need to work on, or to easlily create more space on sunday night when you get done wheelin for the weekend.

The box will be made out of aluminum to save on weight and allow you to add tools to it without the fear of stressing your tailgate hinges.

Let me know what you think

That is definitely cool. Will these only be made for JKs? Also, I know you said it will be made from aluminum, but once I cram all my junk in the box, it seems it would be very heavy on the hinges, especially with an over-sized spare.

I think devising the underseat storage is a great idea. However, it should allow for seat adjustments just like the frame that is there now. I stuff things under there all the time, including recover gear, ice scrapers, jumper cables and towels. (Never travel in a jeep without a towel!) It would be great to have an easy access but secure storage system that used this otherwise dead space. The only things I've ever seen mounted in that space were amplifiers, and If I were to do that, I expect it would be stolen in short order.

The other storage ideas all seem to have been done by someone else. I think there's always room for improvement on ideas, so I would certainly look and see if you've broken the mold.

Not sure if you saw the thread, but Bestop is coming out with a box that goes under the drivers seat for JK's. I want that, but for TJ's. All it has to be big enough for is a Midsized handgun. But you could definitely get away with making use out of all the space available.

Make that box out of steel, with a good quality lock. Doesn't need to be a drawer...can jsut be a simple lockbox, with internal hinges on the door...foam inside (can be added by end user). Make it a requirement to take the seat out in order to get the box out. (Theft prevention.)

You'd sell a few dozen really fast on here.

I like your tailgate box, but I do wonder about the hinges of the tailgate...since having an oversized spare will stress the tailgate. I have to ask. Why does your tailgate box have the slanted side/bottom? might as well use all the space available...make it 90deg. angles.

Make a simple, clean looking center console with lockbox up top.

make a box for underhood.

Make sure you don't forget about the TJ's....

Mr. Car, Tuffy has an underhood lock box. At $111, it's a rip off, but it's no different than a lot of these items. I've seen a few examples of ammo box installations under the hood too. That's not a bad inexpensive alternative.

I didn't see the thread about the locking underseat box, but I will check it out in the JK section. I need one for a YJ, actually, two. I'd put one under each seat.

Would you be willing to mount your seat on top of the storage drawers?
I currently utilize the space under both front seats.
What do you carry in your vehicle at all times, not just on the trail?
In? Tools, spare parts, flashlight, shovel, hopefully me!
Do you mount your tire to your tailgate?
Nope, my 37" crawler would snap that thing off. It's been relocated to my rear bumper.
What sort of tools would you put in it?
All of my current hand tools located in my toolbox inside my add-a-trunk.
Would you use something like this in a pickup bed?
Possibly but don't own a pickup.
Would you mount this other places on the inside of a vehicle if there was space?
Doubtful
Do you currently have mounted to your roll bars? If so, what?
I'm weary of mounting anything to the roll bars, since that means it'll be visible to everyone and increased chance of being stolen or damaged, or cause damage to the occupants.
If your vehicle has a top, how often is the top on?
I live in Seattle. Unless the forcast is sunny for the next week I've got some sort of top on. If the weather is nice I'll pull the soft top back.

I currently have a Tuffy Products locking center console that is large and strong enough for me to secure anything I don't want leaving my Jeep.

I assume by your description, you are referring to the back seat?

I'm interested in a front seat model as well for handgun storage.

I think I'd go for the under seat storage as well. The tailgate thing kinda scares me because of the weight. Depending on a mounting location I think the cage mounted unit might be handy/accessible since I let her go topless most of the time!

I'd like to have small storage boxes for the top of the wheel wells and with padded tops for arm rest. Maybe 3 - 4" tall.

I have an add a trunk where I keep my tools so the tailgate box would not fit on my TJ. Tuffy and Bestop both make under the drivers seat lockboxes. Bestop is "supposed" to come out with one of these this month for TJ. I would also love to see some kind of storage box under the fold and tumble rear seat that would fit with the add a trunk.

As long as you are rviving old threads. Heres my storage solution. An ammo bos and spare tire in the bed. Took the rear seat and belts out.

And here is my August post on it...

Lately I have been asking myself the same question. My favorite idea that i have come up with so far would be a fitted box that bolts into the space between the rear seat and the tailgate with a hinged and locking lid that opens from the top. This in my opinion is way more versatile than the stock lock boxes found in many Jeeps because you are not limited to what you can put in it by the height of the item. You can fit any number of small items in and with the lid up still fit larger items. Please let me know if you like the idea and if maybe it will go into consideration. Lately there have been a lot of thefts in my area and my fathers Jeep my Jeep and my mothers Volvo have all been broken into so i have been hard pressed into finding a convenient and cost efficient way to store my tools and such. Thank you for your time I apologize for the novel.

I've been on the look-out for a roll bar pouch to hold my first aid kit. My problem is that most I've seen at army surplus aren't quickly removable in case of emergency. In my YJ there is room for such a wide variety of things, I've even tried to modify Molley style gas mask and ammo pouches, but nothing yet.

As far as what I do have mounted... My canister of bear spray (zip tied the pouch) and my sound bar!! I'll be real interested in seeing your companies ideas. I plan on a vertical mounted fire extinguisher for behind the drivers side sport bar.
