New to jeeps info plz?

hey i just got a '88 jeep Sahara.....i didn't know anything about it but it looked cool! (typical 17yo mindset) newayz i was hoping to get some info on what the Sahara package is, and what are some of the cheapest things i can do immediately to get better mpg and power? it has the 4.2L 6 and 5spd manual. (it is burning fuel by the smell but it passed smog)

hey, welcome, always good to see more square headlights. the sahara has all the options typically, i believe they are all 6 cyl. usually a/c, hard tops and doors, alloy wheels, instead of wagons, all the frills of 1988. as far as mpg, good luck. you're probably gonna get 11-13. but those carbs were always headaches. they went nuts on emissions in the late 80's, and these carbs suffered, i thnk people swapped them for weber a lot, i'm not a carb guy, maybe someone else knows more. fuel injection is best bet, but not cheap.
don't forget to wave

only one way to find out
usually laws require side view mirrors, relocate mirrors and you're usually ok, illinois has same laws, i never put the mirrors on and had no probs.

Welcome to the Jeep Thing. I have a 94 Sahara. The Sahara had different trim with painted fender moldings. They also have the green interior with the tan piping. My Sahara came from the factory with steel wheels and no A/C. Enjoy your ride. Stick around because there is a lot of experience here. I learn something about everytime I visit. Glad to have another square light sahara.

If that POS carter BBl starts giving you trouble don't even consider the weber conversion. Convert it to a GM Throttle body fuel injection. Here is a step-by-step instruction site, with pictures, for the change. Minimal cost, less than the weber conversion.

good advice, i don't have any experience with either, but fuel injection is definately a better way to go, especially if cost effective
