New To The Jeep World

Hello all,

Just bought a 04 jeep se with 4 in lift and 33x12.5 pro comps on it. 5 speed manual. 5500 miles on it. Got it for 14,000..Hope I didn't get ripped here.....look great though.....however my question at hand here is since it is a 4 banger, I am looking for a ways to improve its proformance, can't seem to find anything on the net for the 4 banger to help out, so if ya can point me in a directions I would appricate.....also just wondering here, sometimes while driving and wind blowing or shifting gears I have notice a little of what i call a dog walk, seems the right rear wants to slide a little, is this normal....I had a 97 chreokee (spelling) with a 3 inch lift and 31x10.5's and never had this problem... so if ya could ease my mind on this and shine some light on the problem if there is one I again would appricate it...will try to get some pictures of the new ride soon...thanks

Welcome to the forum! sounds like a pretty good deal to me...your best bet to improve performance would be to get some new gears (if it doesn't already have them which it probably doesn't)...that should restore a good bit of the power and if you need more theres other ways...maybe not as drastic but they help a lil...u can do things like air intake, headers, cat back exhaust, throttle body, and stuff like that...but first thing would definitely be new gears if it doesn't already have them

Welcome to this forum. With a shorter wheel base, you will feel the wind more. As you have a 4" lift, I would highly recommend looking at your riser for the track arm on the rear axle. Your track arm will be attached to your frame on the right side of the rear of the Jeep. It then runs down towards the left side of your axle. At the point that it connects to your axle, you should see a riser, a piece of metal the makes the connection point about 2-3 inches higher. Make sure the riser is well connected. Should have a big bolt through the center of it, one on top, and one towards the bottom. Make sure all of these bolts are very tight. If they are loose, or missing, tighten, or replace and tighten, using locktite to keep them tight. It is also a good idea to check the bolts holding your lower control arms at each end. They were most likely replaced with the lift. Sometimes they become loose as well.

well went by a jeep off road place today and had the jeep looked at to make sure everything was good to go....have a 4.10 gear in it now they suggested at 4.88 to regain the power...told me $1300.00 for front and back ... They stated the control arms may need to be replaced due to be a little short...also stated that it has a rubicon lift and everything else was perfect....so with that in mind I guess I need to start saving my pennies at least for the gears unless someone as a better offer....thanks for the help and hope to see ya on the trails soon.

1300 is sounding more and more like the standard fee for a re-gear these days. However being in Dallas I'm sure there are more shops that can do this for you. You also might be able to pick up the R&P and install kits yourself cheaper online and then just pay them to install. Normal pricing is running around 250 or so an axle these days.

However I know we have some other fellas on here from TX they might be able to give you some heads up on places to visit.

do you feel that 33's are too much for the 4 banger, i know mines kind of a pooch with stock and was wanting to go bigger. didn't know if 33's would be too much for it?

No.......33" tires are not too much. Power is restored by re-gearing. I have seen people run 44" tires with a 4 bangor. I would not do it, but it has, been done successfully.

I helped a guy out in our Jeep club and fronted the money for him to get re-geared and lockers. The total bill was $1,400.00. So that seems a little high for just re-gearing. There is a place in Arlington that everyone seems to put stock in. It is off of hwy. 360 on Division St. go east about half a mile, and they are on the left side. If they give you a higher estimate, then I would talk to Jeep Outfitters, and get a price from them. Call them and get a quote. The number for JO is 817-447-1376
