Newb- -considering buying a TJ

I need a daily driver for my 12 mile 1 way back road daily commute, plus a vehicle to bop around town, and something to go to NC and drive on the beach to get to better fishing spots on our every 3 year vacation, plus tow a small boat (I tow it with a car now-its a light boat). I have a wife and an 11year old girl, but we'll rarely be all together in this thing. I'm thinking a TJ, with 80-90,000 miles because they fit my budget. We do get winter around here, just not this year. I'm a mechanic by trade, so working on it is no big deal, and there seems to be a ton of accessories out there.

Questions: Should I look for one with a hardtop specifically? They seem to run about $800, and thats enough $ that I think I would be discouraged from buying one later separately. Pay a bit more up front, but a hardtop would probably be better for winter use I'm thinking?

Is the extra rear leg room in the Unlimited versions worth the extra $? If you had to pick between a soft top Unlimited (2 door), vs a Hard top std Wranger, what way would you go?

Most trouble free driveline- inline 6 with std trans, correct? if not which?

Great site, seems to be a LOT of great info here!

if you get heavy snow and don't have a garage, get a hard top
