Newbie Jeep Questions

Hey Guys,

Just joined this forum. I've been trying to buy a jeep but have had some bad experiences. The first one I liked turned out to be a salvage title. The second one had some serious leaks from the axles. The third has a rebuilt tranny. I guess I got some questions for new buyers -

1) I know suspension is preferred over body lifts, but what if the jeep has 2" suspension lift and 1" body lift? One of my friends warned me against buying jeeps with body lifts - I guess I just wanted more info on the "hybrid"

2) What happens if the original owner installed a suspension lift the day he got the new jeep? Does it have any long term problems? I was again told this can result in major leaks, etc.

3) I own a car right now with a rebuilt tranny and was told that once its rebuilt, it'll be never the same as the original factory shipped one. Any comments?

This is the one I've been looking at lately: 2005 jeep wrangler X

Let me know what you guys think. Thanks for answering all the questions and I apologize if I didn't post in the right forums.

Thanks!

Welcome.

Tiny Terror here on the board runs a 1 inch body lift and 2" (budget boost) lift and has encountered no problems. It's a pretty standard match of components to get a decent lift and to be able to run 31 or 33 inch tires at a lower cost. Mind you, she also installed a slight transfer case drop and a motor mount lift to reduce vibrations. But anything over a one inch body lift is IMO questionable.

As long as the previous owner installed the components correctly there should be no issues. But, I would look it over real good and drive it. Listen for clunks, rattles and driveline chatter. and watch for signs of heavy wheeling or off roading (ie. Extremely bent control arm perches and bent skid plates...etc.).

As for the rebuilt tranny, there again, if the transmission shop that rebuilt it is reputable and used OEM quality parts, you should be fine. There are a lot of folks that have had issues with transmission rebuilds due to inferior parts and inexperienced mechanics. Also, if the rebuild didn't include new clutches and bands as well as a thorough cleaning of the valve body and a new torque converter, chances are you'll end up with issues.

There's no problem with 1" body lifts at all. I've had one on my rig for about 4 years now with no issues at all.

Also like Cain said I don't see any issues with putting on a lift right away and no matter when it happens it shouldn't cause any leaks.

I see from the CL ad that you are in PHX. Check out Az Virtual Jeep Club - Powered by vBulletin. I'm close to that board and I know that there are some quality rigs for sale on there right now depending on your budget.

i agree w/ everyone, 1" body lift is ok.

at least the trans was done at the dealer, but i have to say 98% of the time rebuilt trans isn't as good as new. and i've seen a ton of rebuilt go bad within a year.

That sounds scary
Maybe should buy it now and sell it as soon as the warranty is done.
