no doors finally.

finally have a few nice days in the hit and miss weather of NW Ohio so i took the top and doors off for the first time. feels great to have that feeling of more open air. now my only debate is do i want to try and drop my windsheild. very interested to this but just not sure if it is worth it. what does anyone think who has done this before.

don't do it if your driving on the road... only on slow mountain trails... wind burn sucks.

well its not even a 2 mile drive to my job so not too worried about that one really. more worried about hassle of actually doing it. but i have heard others say that on here.

It's easy to let down. I can recall a couple times I have actually seen it done by jeps on the road. Looks foolish to me.

Its fun untill you hit 25mph and above. Below 25mph you want to wear a motorcycle helmet or saftey glasses for mechanics and stuff. You would be suprised what a pebble coming off a tire at 20mph or a bee/fly at 20mph does to your when it hits your face, let alone your eye...

Like I said though, it is pretty fun if your carefull, keep it under 25mph, and wear eye/head protection to be safe. Its not hard either. I believe its 2 bolts front and rear of each side of the sport bar (Driver side/pass side, 8 total) and 1 bolt on each side of the windshield. You want the black bolt, not the painted ones, than fold it down carefully and strap it down with teh footman loops.

Why would it not be legal to drive with the windshield down in a vehicle if you can ride a motorcycle?? Also how would windburn be any worse than a bike?? And also again what is the difference in going over 25 on a bike or over 25 in a jeep with the windshield down?? there must be a HUGE factor involving a jeep with the window down that I am not getting?!?! The only reason I see not to drop it is the trouble and the fact that it will probably leak when you put it back together.

Its a big difference, atleast it was when I drove mine with the windsheild down.

#1 BK is correct. Im not entirely sure about PA, but in Maryland, any Motor Vehicle (anything registered as a car/truck/suv) has to have windsheild.

#2 I think it has to do with the aerodynamic difference than anything. In a Jeep, its a big brick, pushing air out of the way, and a lot of that air is redirected over the hood, into the now open cabin. In a motorcycle, it is more of a slip stream. same sort of effect, but you are more cutting the air than pushing it with a brick. Im not saying dont try it, in fact I encouraged you, I am just saying to try it in a parking lot with saftey glasses or a motorcycle helmet, and do it under 25 based on PERSONAL experience.

That is all.

Not sure If I would run with the windshield down if you still have the stock sport bar, If you have a full cage now thats a different story. It isn't to bad to run with it down, alot like riding a motorcycle.
I believe here in Texas you an legally run a vehicle without a windshield as long as you have wiper blades. HMMM.....Laws are a bit strange here.

It shouldn't leak, by the way. I've had mine down and even off many times.

That's cool, this is just coming from a friend that had a 97 that he took down one time and he said it leaked on him after that. I wouldn't think they should since they are designed to be able to fold them down!!

Because it isn't a motorcycle. Any vehicle in PA that has a windshield must have that windshield intact for PA inspection, so if it's required for inspection it is required in order to take the vehicle on the road.

I wasn't arguing that it was illegal, I was just asking why they would make it illegal, but once I thought about it, I would say motorcycles have to have a windshield to be legal also huh??

Oh I know man, I wasn't being snooty or anything. Just explaining why. I think it would depend on the motorcycle, if it came with a windshield from factory, then it would have to have it for inspection. So I guess it depends on the bike. I know, it is kinda silly, but I guess it's a little different getting hit with a rock in the eye and losing control of a bike than it would to lose control of a large motor vehicle. That's really the only reason I can think of.

I had mine off many times yesterday I almost took them off since the top was down but decided not to wish I would have though since it did't help much with the mud and water that soaked me.

JUST ONE QUESTION- Have you EVER been hit in the eye by a June bug while doing 35-40 mph? You wouldn't be asking about cruising around with the windshield down...

It stung like I had poured alcohol in my eye and my eye was covered with some nasty green crap.

I had a few June Bugs hit me right between the eyes on my Harley. Everytime it happened I had to pull over and and wait for my eyes to clear up again. That was between 60-80MPH.

Good police story on the windshiled issue.

I took my windshield down one day and was driving through the neighboring town when I lived in North Jersey when I got pulled over by the Riverdale police. I had my seat belt on and sunglasses on and asked him why he pulled me over. I knew I was not speeding and my inspection was current. His response..."You can't drive on the road with the windshiled down...blah, blah, blah...this is a safety violation...blah, blah,blah...Put the windshieled up right now or I'm gonna write you a ticket."

To put this into perspective, I knew the officer (since he pulled me over many-many previous times for whatever reason) and I challenged him on what statue I was violating. He could not respond with an exact statue number but basically stated I was operating in an unsave manner. I explained to the officer that this was an option to the Jeep and that I did not modify the equipment and it had passed inspection. He did not want to hear my justification.

I then asked the officer would I meet his safety complaince requirements if I was to wear my motorcycle helmet while driving with the windshield lowered. I reiterated that a helmet suffices for motorcycles and that by driving a Jeep vehicle with a helmet would exceed any crash protection a motorcycle could offer while maintaining head and eye protection offered by the helmet.

The officer got frustrated with me and told me to put up the windshield and "get lost".

I was not satisfied with this response and being younger and much more daring and arrogant, I went home put on my motorcycle helmet, dropped the windshield and went back through town...right passed the police officer who pulled me over. The look on his face was simply priceless. He basically shook his head back and forth and let me by. I must have driven 50 miles that afternoon, through a dozen towns and passed at least 2 more cops and nobody pulled me over.....

True story!
