No spark after water pump change

Hello there I have a 2.4l tj 2003. I recently had to change the water pump. In removing the timing belt the right cam sprocket slipped and I had to try to set the timing back. Now keep will turn over but won't start. I thought and still might be a timing issue. I've tried setting it numerous times and no joy. I went and got a spark plug from auto zone and pulled out a wire and plugged the soak plug in. Had someone crank it while I watched plug and I seen no spark what so ever. If my timing is off shouldn't I still get a spark? Timing is mechanical, jeep has coil pack not a distributed cap. Jeep ran fine b4 I changed pump, except the over heating issue.
