noob question:when did Wranglers get coil springs?

I grew up seeing Jeep Wranglers with leaf springs but now I noticed some with coil springs. When did this happen? Was this change made to all Wranglers or just a certain model?

Ah, so the TJ is 97-up...until the JK and the YJ is prior to the TJ with the CJ prior to the YJ?

On a dark, cold day when Hell froze over. A day that shall live in infamy. A day when the stewards of the most iconic brand in American automotive decided to ruin the Jeep.

What? Too thick?

I'm just joking. A lot of "real" Jeep owners were mad about those springs. I don't think any of them are anymore. But at one point it was almost - almost- as horrifying as the square headlights.

...but Geoff beat me to it. :/

Lets see in 1997 I was 10 years old playing with my dicast XJ, beleiving that it could go anywhere and do anything on my living room floor .. Today is the first time I have ever heard of what it may have been like in 97 when leaf springs on a wrangler were a thing of the past.. No Idea that there was this uproar that you old farts speak of..

When I was your age, we had to ride Jeeps to school with solid springs underneath them. The ride was so harsh that our milk turned to ice cream. I lost all my teeth by the time I was 17, but dang nab it, those rigs was tough. Tougher 'n the steak at the Sizzler. Tougher 'n my mother-in-law.

You sissy whippersnappers with your "coils" and your "suspension" just don't know how easy you got it.

My CJ is for sale. The company JK is awfully sweet. Every time I think about driving that CJ all the way up to the mountains, I head for the company garage and swipe one instead. My CJ hasn't left the driveway in almost two years.

I'm an old fart too but I haven't been around jeeps for a very long time.
It only took me 14 years to realize the leafs were gone
Anyways, I'm not much into power equipment either but I have no problem with those that are.
As long as a vehicle can be ordered in it's simplest form the factory can option all the stuff they want.
I find it funny that the Kia Soul commercial shows all the other cars as souless appliances while the Kia is exactly the same thing.
Don't even get me started on plastic engine covers.
I like seeing the moving parts on my vehicle, hearing/feeling them work, and being able to get to them.
No matter what you do with your Jeep on the weekends it's one of the last honest cars out there. I wish they still had the inline six though.

The history of the coil deign dates back to the 1940's to the MB/GPW/CJ platform. There was a design study done, but nothing came of it on the production side.
