I don't think you could go wrong for getting around the city if you needed a vehicle. Go with the hard top option. If you do your homework and look around you probably could find one that will have both the hard top and soft tops with it.

I had a wrangler back in the day (late 80's) when I was at OHIO STATE. I only had it down there a few times. It had the soft top and stuff got stolen all the time where I lived. My car had no locks on the half doors. So I took two pieces of rope and tied a dummy grenade to them, one on the handle and one on the pin. It hung in the air between the seat.

No body messed with it when it was down there.

I DON'T THINK THAT WOULD GO OVER SO WELL IN OUR POST 9/11 SOCIETY

I DON'T THINK IT WOULD HAVE GONE OVER VERY WELL IF SOMEBODY ACTUALLY SAW A GRENADE IN MY JEEP!!!

Hahahaha, that sounds like a great idea. Until NYPD bombsquad blow up the jeep in an "controlled explosion"...
I have to say though, after reading the forums, you jeep guys sure are creative!

Yeah when you take a step back and think about that.... WOW was that not a real smart thing to do. I'll blame it on youthful enthusiasm!

If you do get a hardtop and want to take it off remember to look for a place you can store it. It's not something you want to haul up to a 5th story walk-up and use as a coffee table.

Leaving it on the sidewalk with a grenade attached to it probably won't work...

"Broken":

I'm actually trying to figure out what I'm going to do about storing my hard top after I move as well, and the best alternative I have come up with (other then trying to rent someone else's garage which adds up pretty fast$$) was looking at one of those public storage places. so if you can find one of those that is big enough for the top, in NYC it is probably cheaper to pay $93 a month or so for a storage space, then to get a garage...

I think I'll go for the soft top and just learn to not leave anything of value inside. As far as personal security goes, well... if someone's going to carjack me I don't think a bit of fiberglass is gonna help much.

Not to mention most of those idiots would have no clue what to do with a clutch and stick. My wife noticed the other day that it's not a good idea to hit the remote control lock button on the ZJ and then try to start it . Might be worth carrying an extra remote and hit the lock button when you bail out and are about 20 feet away.

I also would break down for a full tuffy security console though. But don't leave the key on your key ring, just like carrying an extra empty wallet to throw in the opposite direction you run in if you get mugged....
