I always did the "Thumbs up". Because a Thumbs up doesn't need to be reciprocated.

It's pretty much just saying, " I like your choice of vehicle." They can respond if they like but it's not required. That was in my old CJ-7 in East Texas.... now that I'm in LA and see 10-15 JKU Sahara's everyday... we'll see how this pans out.

I think JKs are getting an unfair rep.

I drive a JKU, take it wheeling, and wave at every wrangler i notice. Hell, part of the reason i bought the thing was because of the wave.

On the road, i definitely get just as many snubs from older model jeeps as i do from JKs.

It's funny, down here we get allot of "Snowbirds" towing their stock Wranglers that seem to be mostly TJs. I never get these people to wave. On the brighter side, there are a couple of Wranglers I pass each day either coming to work or going home. There was one stock JK and a stock TJ that wouldn't wave back. That didn't stop me, I still waved at each one every day and they finally figured it out. Now during my commute, I have a 99%-100% wave success rate.

I like the thumbs up idea. I'm going to give that a try!

Waveless!

As I've said before on here, not many wranglers of any description here in the UK . So if you come across one it's a big deal. In the 6 months since I've had my JKU I've seen two, both parked up next to mine. Today, coming back from my favourite pub, after having a pint,I saw in the distance two headlights rather close together, could this be a jeep? The tension was palpable, the excitement rising. It got closer...... a wrangler ! Yeah! Hand twitched, waiting for the right moment to execute 'the wave' should it be nonchalant? A royal wave? No...... full on, give it some wellie type of wave, plus a flash of the headlights just in case! The time was right - wave and associated flash! The wrangler just sailed past totally ignoring me, no by your leave or kiss my arse. To make it worse it was LHD with American tags! ( Mildenhall airbase nearby) WTF! Probably have to wait another 6 months for the next one.

On behalf of the rest of the "Yanks", I'd like to say sorry.

You said American tags, I guess he must have been new. Doesn't the MOT still require Americans to comply with UK laws and get UK plates? Just curious, I was stationed @ RAF Woodbridge a looooong time ago as my first assignment.

Morning everyone. Well, my post was just a bit of fun really, he was probably desperate to get back to base I should think! You can drive a foreign registered vehicle in the uk for up to 6 months on non- UK license plates provided you are a temporary resident and the vehicle is registered and taxed in its home country. As soon as you are a permanent resident you have to register it here. Hey, beastmaster, did you enjoy the UK?

Good morning. I enjoyed it very much. It was a bit of a culture shock for an 18 year old kid fresh in the military that had never been outside the state of Arizona. Was there for two years, bought a brand new MG Midget (yes, it was that long ago) and had fun pub crawling and cruzing around the country side.

Just sent this to my girlfriend. She's had her Rubicon since 2005 (it's an 03) and she's still a non waver! In those seldom moments when she's driving, I often slide my hand up in front of the wheel to wave for her so she's not looked at like a douchebag, even though she hates it...

I love the Jeep wave. Live in NC and get waves from all sorts of fellow Jeepers. Mine's a completely stock white JKU chick Jeep, but I still get waves back from nearly everyone. The onlly people who tend not to wave are the soccer moms with their whole family displayed on the rear windshield. Heck, I've even taught my husband and girlfriends to wave at other Jeeps when we're out cruising around.

On the other hand, when I was back in NY visiting my parents, I got no waves from anyone. I think the 'southerns are friendlier' sterotype definitely applies to the Jeep wave.

Wife and I were driving around yesterday. We even went to the mall . We were about 1 for 10 on the return waves but that one felt like it made up for the other 9 that didn't.

Couldn't agree more. I live in New England, minutes from the CT/MA and NY/MA borders. The New Yorkers almost never wave, I get a few from the CT plates, and it's a crap shoot with the Massholes. Back home in TX, and when I lived in CA and KS, I always got waves. At least enough that I rarely remember not getting waves.

I got a return wave from a Long Island JK soccer mom yesterday in the rain! Almost drove into a tree I was so stunned. But when the next 3 I met (2 with mods) failed to wave back I realized the world wasn't coming to an end....whew!

Check E Bay.... A bunch of different options from several different sellers. Getting waves still hasn't increased

Here in ND I finally had a woman wave back. But the next 3 jeeps didn't. It's slowly catching on.

I'm finding about 60% wave backs. Mostly from males in 2 door soft tops. The least wave response, seem to be from Soccer moms driving 4 door hard tops. This new JK is my first Jeep, but I am familiar with Corvette and Harley Davidson waves. My wife asked "how are you supposed to know?" Maybe a page in the owners manual, that way everybody should see it.

From the data that i've gathered over the past 1 1/2 years the amount of wave backs come from 85% men and 15% women. Of those, 10% were from cj's, 40% yj's, 30% tj's, 10% jk's, and 10% jku's.

LOL! Well said, sportsgal! I don't discriminate against other Wranglers; I wave to everyone, lifted or not, mod or stock. It's like being on a boat or riding a Harley...boaters and bikers wave to each other, too. It's a mutual acknowledgment that we dig the same thing, be it our Jeeps, boats, or bikes. Spread the love, brothers and sisters, and KCWO (keep cool and wave on!)

I seen quite a few jeeps on my trek to Palm Beach county yesterday afternoon. While i waved to all, i think literally only 1 waved back.....
