re: Offical Wrangler Forum Jeep Wave Thread

Hmmm...
I drive a JK four door
I wave
I tow
I pull other vehicles out of ditches
I've had it loaded to the gills with camping gear.
I've taken it offroad but haven't done any serious rock-crawling or mudding.
I probably look like a soccer mom but I'm not. The thing's usually loaded down with swords not soccer gear. [don't hear that every day!]

I've noticed that most guys will wave back but only a few women do. Why is that?

My wave depends on the day but its usually the hand on the wheel and all the fingers flared up.

I am a female so I feel safe posting this---most females don't get the Jeep thing or embrace the lifestyle like others do.

I have been so freaked out by all the waves and everything (not by other Jeepsters though). I go through a drive through and the people at the window tell me they love my jeep. Driving down a busy road, people wave and give me thumbs up (from pickups and cars). But every Jeep driver I pass, never ]waves. I'm used to motorcycle edict, wave. I live in Texas, maybe that's just how motorcyclist are and Jeepers are too arrogant or something. I'm proud of the Jeep Wrangler and I do wave. BTW been customizing and will post pics if anyone wants to see.

Warning:

Owning, registering, insuring, or driving a Jeep implies knowledge of and intent to abide by the following rules, regulations, and guidelines. Failure to obey the letter or spirit of the rules may result in your being ignored by other Jeep owners as you sit along the side of the road next to your stalled vehicle in a blizzard surrounded by Saturns, Yugos, and Hyundais.

Definition:
The Jeep Wave: An honor bestowed upon those drivers with the superior intelligence, taste, class, and discomfort tolerance to own the ultimate vehicle - the Jeep. Generally consists of vigorous side-to-side motion of one or both hands, but may be modified to suit circumstances and locally accepted etiquette. Examples of commonly accepted modifications:

Top off: One handed wave above windshield or outside body tub
Top off during blizzard: Shiver and nod, hands may remain frozen to steering wheel
Southern/rural locations: Raise fingers from steering wheel, nod
It's not what you buy, it's what you build and what you do with it.
In keeping with this cardinal rule of Jeeping, categories have been established to account for each part of the equation.

These categories are:

The Jeep Waving Hierarchy: Based on the vehicle itself. Takes into account the nostalgia factor, the discomfort tolerance quotient, and the amount of owner dedication required to maintain the steed.
The Modifying Sub-categories: Based on what you do with your Jeep.
Equipment Adjustments: What you build.
General Rules:
1. All Jeepers are responsible for upholding the tradition of the Wave. Upon contact with a higher scoring Jeep, a Jeeper is required to initiate the Wave, and continue the Wave until:

The Wave is returned
The Wave is blatantly disregarded
The higher scoring vehicle has passed by and is out of sight
2. All Jeepers are required to return the Wave, unless the initiating vehicle is clearly has a negative (below 0) score.

3. All Jeepers are encouraged, but not required, to return the Wave to negative balance vehicles, and take any opportunity presented to guide and mentor them about their responsibilities to their Jeeps in the hopes that they can correct the error of their ways.

4. When unsure of status or wave requirements of a particular encounter or unable to completely assess the other Jeep's score quickly enough to ensure that the proper Jeep Wave Etiquette rules are followed, immediately initiate wave.

"When in doubt, WHIP IT OUT!"

First, the Jeep Waving Hierarchy (JWH):
Category A Pre-CJ: 30
Category B Pre-AMC CJ: 27
Category C Other CJ: 25
Category D Commando: 20
Category E YJ 16
Category F TJ 15
Category G Cherokee, Wagoneer: 10
Category H All other Jeeps: 5
Category I All other 4WD vehicles EXCEPT yuppie Explorers: 0
Category J All other vehicles 0

The Modifying Sub-Categories (MSCs):
(What you do with it)
MSC Guidelines:

1. MSCs must be considered during all Jeep encounters, and wave patterns must be adjusted accordingly.

2. MSC 5 is the median - the accepted norm.

3. MSCs from 1 through 4 will increase score as listed.

4. MSCs 6 and 7 will decrease score as listed.

MSC 1: Top off; vehicle, driver, and all occupants covered with mud: +30
MSC 2: Top partially off; vehicle and some occupants covered with Mud: +20
MSC 3: Top on; vehicle covered with mud: +10
MSC 4: Top off during snow, sleet, hail, or heavy rain: +5
MSC 5: Somewhat dirty: 0
MSC 6: Obviously recently washed, but immediately re-muddied a little: -10
MSC 7: Clean, dry, unscratched, untested: -30

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Equipment Adjustments
(What you build)

Consideration must be given to the current mechanical condition of the vehicle, including all modifications for trailworthiness, comfort, appearance, and spouse-appeasal. These are known as Equipment Adjustments (EAs). EAs are a complicated category, and often difficult to appraise under certain conditions (passing head-to-head at 60 mph, when covered with mud, etc) but must be used to modify score when feasible. If a vehicle is so covered with mud that you are unable to ascertain any of the EAs, you MUST assume that the EAs, when combined with the MSC 1 adjustment, would place the vehicle in a higher scoring position than any non-MSC 1 Jeep, and immediately initiate the wave. Otherwise, EAs will adjust score as follows:

Engine:

No I don't wave at the equipment operators, but I do return the wave if one is given. Kinda cool though, I think I've opened up a whole new level of "The Wave"

Everyone up here in ME waves, once in a while you'll fing someone who doesn't, they're either older and probably don't know about the wave or younger and aren't really into it. I'm in the Brunswick area and find that a lot of the military boys from the base don't seem to care much for the wave.

sometimes when I'm topless and doorless I'll wave out the door at an H2 or H3.
Sorta like a "hey see what I can do" type of thing.

is that with or wihout kids in back, top down

I generally wave at everybody. This is actually pretty funny. I was spending small fortune on advertising for my new wellness center. I was the part of a large group chiropractic office in the area for about 3 years and knew a lot of people. When I open my doors some people couldn't find and because of a non-compete, I couldn't directly call them. I have a nice family 'vehicle,' read (minivan). So I wanted a jeep for myself, my WIFE has a minivan. Well, my jeep has generated more referrals than any advertising I have ever done. Everybody here waves at me, pulls up and asks how to get in touch with me at stop lights, follows me into parking lots, its great, cheap too. Well my kids have totally taken to the idea and now they wave at EVERYBODY. The think it is so cool to be in the jeep. Hey they're smart kids. ;-)

Jeep Wave..... Is it a thing of the past????

Guys,

I have been pretty active here since I joined, but I am a very excited Jeep owner and have many questions..

So, here is my latest issue:

I can remember the days of my 89 YJ Laredo and my later 98 Sport and just about every brother/sister Jeep driver waved at me and I did the like.

First; when I take my 00 sport out i rarely see other Wranglers, but when I do, they rarely wave... What is up with that?

Owning a Jeep Wrangler is a brother/sisterhood (i hail from the Pac/NW so I have to be PC here).. Why would you not wave at a brother or sister? Regardless, JK, YJ, or TJ, we are all enthusiasts and need to recognize others.. They are by far the most impractical vehicle under the sun, and we need to show our other friends with lack of practicality and sense some love!!! Show the deuce or raise a hand... We need to see some love because you know "big oil" isn't going to be sending us any "Thank You" notes anytime soon.

Keep the Wave alive!!!

i'm done now.. or maybe for a little while anyway!

probably not, my xj is my dd, and its only a little modified. wrangler guys are bad enough around here, no one waves in xj's. but i'm always in a jeep though.

here's what i've come up with myself. i'll wave everytime to a cj, or yj, or any modified jeep. i will return any wave, but there's just too many tj and now jk owners out here that have no clue.

it is a brotherhood, it goes beyond the wave. i stop for a jeep in trouble, and people stopped for me all the time. i threw a u joint on the express way a long time ago, one jeep stopped, and a few slowed down and gave me the thumbs up or down question, i gave thumbs up and waved them by.

the yuppie jeep owners have no clue.

So your a yuppie then?

I got the funniest comment the other day going south on 41.

Some chick pulls up next to me in a jeep looked like a 2000sih. It was lifted white with 35's on it -- rigged out- lights and the works. She is gorgeous btw and looks over at me in my bigger tires only jeep (97tj). I had everything off the thing too- doors, top, rear tre and bracket rear seat outta it. She goes cute Jeep with a big smirk. My reply was I would ride you harder then you have ever drivin your jeep. She laughed and we drove off. Good times.

I love this!! It is still alive!!!

I tried my damndest to stop and let another brother out of a burger king parking lot.. He had his top off as did i (My Jeep hasn't had a top on since the day after i bought it early august) and i just couldn't help myself by stopping traffic to allow another brother to get out. He wasn't able to turn left against traffic, but i was able to say "I tried" and he could hear me because neither of us had our tops on.. WHOOOO HOOOOO!!

Did i mention that I love Jeeps???

Also, my DD is a 2005 GMC Yukon and trust me, I HATE GAS STATIONS, but i see Wranglers/CJ/JKs all day long and it is hard for me to keep my arm down..

They would probably know that I am a Jeep owner, but still....

The KINGDOME Started the Wave; Jeep Wrangler owners perfected it!
