Oil cap

After adding some oil into my '10 Sahara earlier today I forgot to put the oil cap back on and drove for a few miles. About 8 to be exact. I've NEVER done that before!!

Thankfully I wanted to check the oil level after driving for a bit and discovered my mistake. And even more thankful....the oil cap was still sitting on the fuse box cover! I guess the hood held it in place.

Anyway....
Can driving without the oil cap on cause any problems? Pressure issues?
The jeep drives fine from what I can tell so hopefully all is ok!!

Thanks!!

eh, not really just driving it, some dust MIGHT could get in there but i doubt any particles big enough to cause damage. esp just driving 8 miles down the road. i drove from columbus GA to orlando ( 7-8hrs) and halfway back once with my cap off and it never had an issue

how is your oil level ?? it should be fine ..maybe just a very little low, but it can make a big mess----

good rule of thumb when you change oil in any vehical is to put the cap where the latch goes(not the outside latches) that way when you shut your hood it wont close.

when i first started at our dealership thats all i did was oil changes you would not belive how many times leaving your cap off can happen.. i learned quick to put the cap in the hole where the latch goes..

...bap

Oil level is fine now....I just added a quart in between changes.
There was no mess at all, no oil exited the fill hole....

Yea I'll remember to leave the cap somewhere where I know I won't forget to put it back on!

Thanks for the replies guys!

Dang, you guys were lucky..Not with my jeep but forgot to put the cap back on, about 5 miles later about 2 quarts of oil was all over recently painted valve cover and everywhere else in the bay. Leaked into my alternator and caused it to stop functioning (so i thought) Towed home from Pittsburg to North jersey. Popped the clutch going down the driveway and it started right up, never had a problem with the alternator 1 year later (knock on wood). Maybe it needed to low tow home to dry it out.
