OMG are you serious??

So I buy what I thought was a cherry 98 jeep wrangler with 107K miles in June of 08. A nice soft top with a 5 speed manual. Put a towing package on it and I'm ready to roll with my land yacht... Until,,, a soft knocking noise from the engine compartment begins to sound at 3K rpms and gets louder as it goes higher (in all gears). A few weeks back the check engine gauges light pops on sometimes at idle and oil pressure drops to 0 till the gas it tapped.

Today the noise that only was heard above 3K rpms now is on full time... and quite loud. I run it to the dealer (as I'm not the master mechanic, can do brakes, and stuff like that) for a diagnosis. They tell me I need a new engine OMG are you serious? They gave a price estimate of $1200 just for labor and $1700 for an engine. Holy S... They say don't drive it cause the engine may seize or blow (oh the drama)

Should I get a second opinion? Just spent the past hour or so searching for rebuilt engines on line found a couple at $1150 with a 7 year 70K warranty.

I need some thoughts from folks that have had jeeps for way longer than I have. What do you think?? get a second opinion? get it done? run from the dealer? Help

So what did they say was the exact issue with it? Are they getting you a new engine for 1700? What all does that include? I would check around at other place of course to price shop. btw which engine is it the 4 or the 6?

It is a 4 and they said that the bearings were bad causing the oil pressure to drop and it was going to lead other failing ultimately costing way more to fix than just changing out the engine. The 1700 was for a rebuild and it would come with an unlimited warranty. Really not happy about dropping 3+K on an 11 year old vehicle

I wouldnt bring it to the dealer. You could probably get the whole job done somewhere else with a rebuilt motor for less than 2000.
