Painting a hard top

I'm picking up a used hard top and a set of full doors tomorrow. The top is in great condition other than being faded out. I was looking for a recomendation from some who have painted theirs. I'm going to have to use a base coat clear coat on the doors but figure a single stage paint would be better for the top.

I painted mine, I had the top off, I used engine de greaser and scrubbed it with a red scotchbrite pad, this cleaned it well and got any dirt or grime off of it. Hosed it off real well. let it sit and dry.
Then taped off the windows and put some paper over the front part, just to keep overspray from going inside.
I wiped it all down again, then painted it. I went several light coats. It actually came out not too bad. it would have come out better if I had more light in my dingy garage. But the tops only on for winter anyway.

I washed mine, taped off the the windows and vents, then sprayed it with Krylon Fusion. As I recall I bought 3 cans (~$5/ea) and used maybe 2 cans and that included a few light coats.

i got mine done in base coat clear coat at a local pro shop, $400 with a lifetime warranty, but i have seen many nice rattle-can jobs on this website, if i had the time i might have gone that way. but the pro shop did a fantastic, flawless job, they even detailed the underside (white) so the entire top looks brand new:

I am a rattle can primer right now but we did another one recently in a nice white gloss. Took a long time to prep and prime but came out looking good. May redo mine in a gloss this winter. Take it all the way ooff spray the inside first and the the outside. The reinstall it will be a great looking change. Oh by the way the white top looks better thaan black on mine.

I had mine on my 1993 YJ plow jeep Raptor lined at the shop I worked at. Looks nice with the texture, just like factory. It's been about 4 years and still looks good.[IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG][IMG][/IMG]

You can just clean it good and use Penetrol, it will bring back the shine. I did mine when I bought over 5 years ago and it stills looks good.

Here's a pic of when I did a sample spot to see what it would look like.

X2 I had mine done professionally also. It's clear coated and very glossy. I wish it wasn't so dang on shiny. They tried to steer me away from going that route. But I wanted it shiny, now I'm regretting it
