Paper work in private party sales

Is it as simple as handing over the cash and have the seller sign the title and turn it over to me? Can I drive away with his license plates? I suppose not.

Call the DMV and ask, it varies by state I believe. In AZ I own my plate.

New Mexico requires a state designed bill of sale, a title signed by the former owner, and money for the 3% sales tax. Yes, they even charge tax on private sales of vehicles here.

you're lucky, tennessee charges 7% for vehicle sales tax. you can usually get a gift form to say that you traded for something of similar value and don't have to pay taxes. but here they require a bill of sale and title.

Texas you just need the signed title and an odometer statement, but, if you buy a used vehicle out of state and bring it into Texas to be registered they require you to have a safety inspection(not the same as normal yearly inspection at least it wasn't where I had it done) before you can register it, and in order to get the safety inspection you must have insurance on the actual vehicle to be inspected, and in order for insurance to cover the vehicle it will need to be registered in your name...took me a week of dealing with the local DMV office in Dallas one time until I finally found someone with some common sense.

Also call your insurance co. with the VIN imediatley. I would do this even before handing over the cash-- that way you are covered in the event something bad happens

I'm gonna guess driving with someone else's plates is a bad idea, I know it is in Michigan. Here you are to drive to the Secretary of State with no plate to get a temporary issued. Here the odometer statement and sale price for taxes are written on the title when it's signed over. Also need a lien release letter if it's not a "clear" title.

In Delaware the plate stay with the vehicle. The new owner has 30 days to register in their name. You basically sign the title and mail in the bottom portion of the title that says you sold it to so and so and its theirs. Delaware also does the inspections right at the dmv for free but if the tags still have time on them you don't have to get it inspected until the tags run out

In PA, you can go to the DMV or an auto license broker service

They will issue new plates, but the title needs to be signed by the current owner in their presence or notarized if the previous title is from PA

you can also pay the sales tax there

Just depends on state, some state thee plate belongs to car, but missouri the plate belongs too owner(just ask my buddie he just got a parking ticket from a car he sold 3 months ago and forgot to take the plates off) missouri you just have to sign title but a bill of sale is always a good too cover your ass(notarized even better) and when you title in missouri you pay sales taxes which is based on year and value. Also on missouri you have 30 days on your old plates on new car but must have current insurance.

Big issue if there is a lien on the vehicle. I had to send a check from OHIO to FLORIDA made out to the lien holder then it was released to the PO who sent it to me.I called DMV in OHIO and they told me to put my old plates on it and drive it back. They told me to have a bill of sale and proof of insurance..

This all tells me I have to take the owner to a tag place and do it all there. Too many things to go wrong. Another reason to buy from a dealer if I can find what I want.

i disagree, its not much work just call your dmv/dor or who ever you get your plates from they'll tell you what to do, and if you go to a dealer you will always pay more and they charge you for the tilting and licencing fees

As above. Tag place will take care of everything for you that the state requires. Buyer and seller both must be present. Title will get transfered, you will buy new plates, pay the sales tax. Quick and easy, fees are minimal. After that's done call your insurance agent to have it added to your policy.
