This is a cool mod that is relatively cheap and easy to do yourself which also serves a good purpose! I made some a while back. Have made a couple different styles now! Like how your using the shackles, never thought of that!

The red and black wrap is a 2 color crown sinnet, as for the wrap around it, not exactly sure but I think it looks kinda the opposite of the crown sinnet called a wall knot. very easy stuff to do and looks great, I never thought of putting the wall knot around the sinnet like that, I had the crown sinnet in the rear of the Jeep for a while but they were too small even for the kids so I just made another set of these grab handles.

For the oh shiz handle and the door handles I used the same cobra weave that I used on the grab handles. Just have to do some creative maneuvering of the cords to make it a straight line on the oh shiz handle. I found that out after I had done it and thats why its kinda wavy. I could fix it but Im too lazy lol.

Not sure, I would have to take them apart to measure. At least thats how I did the grab handles. I built one then pulled it apart to see the lengths. I use this paracord storage sinnet to store the cord and it actually makes it easier to wrap those things.

So heres a writeup on how I made them including lengths of rope and item numbers. This is my first writeup and I dont have the biggest vocabulary so hope this makes sense to everyone lol.

Items needed
Paracord (any color you desire)
Anchor shackels with screw pins (Mini D-rings item #93855 at harbor freight)
lighter
scissors

First off we will need to make the core of the grab handle You will need:
35 inches of cord (qty. 2) for rollbar wrap core
50 inches of cord for the core of the main handle
2 d-ring shackles

This is what the handle wrap core should look like after you burn the edges together

And here is the entire core all mocked up

Things to note: I wrapped the main handle core around the end pieces 3 times and the end pieces around the D-ring only 2 times. I did this to make the core bigger and therefore the main wrap will be bigger.

Now were done making the core and heres what you should have:

Now its time to start wrapping. (que Dr. Dre and Eminem) lol.

Items needed:
110 inches of cord (qty 2) for rollbar wraps (55inches of each color)
120 inches of cord for main grab handle wrap (60 inches of each color)

This is the time consuming part and I am going to cheat a bit and Post a video that I found particularly helpful.

I wrapped the main core first and made the knots as tight as possible and butted them right up to the cores of the roolbar wraps. heres a pic

This is the part you will see when the handle is finished

Here is the under side so you can see how I melted the cord to ensure it wouldnt come apart. On the left is where I started the wrap and on the right is where I ended it, basically I just melted them together the same way as when I started.

Then I did the rollbar wraps with the same wrap. The only issue I had here is getting around the core for the main grab handle. Hard to explain but I just kept going and worked around the cores, heres some pics.

Top:

Bottom:

Hope this helps and if there are any questions please dont hesitate to ask. Good luck and Happy Jeepin'
Great post. Thanks for sharing. Now I need to go get some paracord!

@JeepsInDeep and @bamajeeper00, sorry it took me so long to respond to this, @LilYeller is right the red spiral is a two colored crown sinnet. To do the black handle I just braided the black and red to where I wanted the handle to start then placed to black strands across the braid and then continued with the black and red until it was where I wanted the black handle to stop. Once I reached this point with the black and red I went back and braided the black around it so that it would be a little thicker and fit the hand a little better. After I caught the black up to the black and red I finished the black and red spiral. Complicated to explain. When I do another one I will post a couple pictures of the steps I am talking about to make this more clear. Probably be within the next week or so bc supposed to make some for someone. Thanks for the interest!!

I just ordered my paracord and am going to be trying this soon... I was going to try and use snaps like from an old bookbag or something instead of the d rings as it would be easier to get them on and off but I am worried if they would be strong enough...

A) Why would you take them off?

B) If you make them correctly, the binding will be so tight that you will need something like a D ring to bring the arms together around the bar. I know mine were that way ... I almost couldn't get them on because it was so tight.

@gillette I used the snaps like you are talking about and they have worked fine so far. I think a may use the d-rings next time tho. Anyone know a good place to get these? Prolly just use amazon I assume but wondered if hardware store would have the right size?

Any hardware store will have anchor shackles. Problem is, if you ask for help to find them, the 16 yr old clerk that's never seen 90% of the hardware in that store is going to have one hell of a time finding it. Ace, yaegers, home depot etc should have these provided they're somewhat well stocked. Good luck guys. Mine turned out great.

Cobra isn't the easiest or cleanest way to wrap handles (you got really good results, you just did it the hard way is all)... google "hitching" or "coxcombing". they are the same thing, but "coxcombing" is the nautical term (ARRrrr!).

Starts out with a simple half knot.

Continues by adding more half knots. wrap once around "with the lay", meaning follow the direction the last knot came out instead of bending it back over the knot you just made (bending opposite the last direction will reverse the "spiral" direction). And run the tail under the loop, and pull the whole thing tight.

Repeat the process. It's that simple. eventually you'll have the entire wrap done and you simply burn in the end after the last knot.

Might have to give this a shot on my oh shiz handle. I actually wrapped my knife handle like this and I liked how it came out. Just have to try to figure out how to get 2 colors into it. I was going to try a single strand ringbolt hitch but this is way easier and I like the triangle pattern on your handle.

Frayed Knot Arts Main Page with Navigation Aids

go to tutorials and look under coxcombing at "half moku". it is a specific two strand coxcombing style. with two colors, it will result in solid colors on each half. if you want striped banding, you can do a St. Mary's in two strands instead of three. I actually had a two strand st mary's on my e-brake, but it kept the button from springing back out, and I removed it. the moku combing is similar to a cobra stitch done around a bar, but because of the lay, it's a lot more secure.

Does the paracord cause some wear on the canvas/foam that is over the roll cage?

Havent noticed any wear and tear from these on the fronts, and I dont have rollbar pads on the rear. so, for me anyways, the answer is no.

Hubby is ordering more paracord to make these for ours. He made us both 2 keychains today so we can more quickly distinguish between the keys. Gecko for me, Black Widow for him.

He's making me some zipper pulls for the windows tonight. We have to order some 1,000 ft rolls for the rest though. He's going to make grab handles for all 4 doors and the back seats, basketweave the steering wheels, and basketweave the grab handles over the glove box too.

Neat idea. He's been playing with paracord for ages, never thought to put a more practical use to it for the Jeeps though.

Sweet, make sure to post up some pics. Also you might want to check measurements for the rollbar wraps since I made these for my TJ and IDK how much different the JK rollbar pads are.

Oh good point. I'm not sure if he got his measurements from this thread or not. I'll have to bring that up before he starts it tomorrow. Totally didn't think to ask what model it was that he got the idea from. He's playing with paracord at work all the time. I was just glad he was making something I could use for a change. Here's the zipper pulls he made me this evening. He's doing his tonight too. He said he might need more paracord to do the grab handles. I think he only had a couple hundred feet left and he's got to do 2 Jeeps.

Yea definately going to need more cord. I used about 300ft for my 4 grab handles, seat belt holders, and various other handles I wrapped.
