any tips on getting that sucker off? i broke the pitman arm puller i rented. ive hosed it in PBblaster and hammered on it....should i put some heat on it?
I took AzTJ's method when I did mine, but I used the puller and an air chisel/hammer to beat the snot out of the arm. Try it if you have access to one, you can't beat 150 taps/min
i didnt think of the air hammer. i soaked it PB blaster several times, i dont know when i started. i was scared to heat it b/c of the steering box seal (like yall mentioned).
im gonna soak a piece of string in PB blaster and wrap it up and try agian later this week hopefully.
if worse comes to worse ill try cutting. usually the destructive path is the first one that comes to mind for me.....this time it didnt, im disappointed in me.
keep the ideascoming if anyone else has anything to add....
the proper way to use the puller is to put tension on the pitman arm a little at a time. Then hit the pitman arm with a hammer. It doesn't even take much force to move the pitman arm . Then tighten it again and hit with hammer. Repeat until it falls off. Using an impact on the puller will only damage the puller beyond repair. I never use lube to pull the pitman arm off and have zero issues doing so.
thats kinda what i did. id crank down on it, beat the hell out of it, crank some more, and so on.maybe i was over tensioning it before i hit it. ill try again later this week
No such thing. The only point past over tension is the point of breaking your tool. It works to hit the pitman arm on opposite sides when you are pulling.
