i think im gonna be plasti-dipping my door handles, and emblems, on my jeep and my dodge truck.

Do i need to scuff the embelms with scotch bright before i spray or is it just a clean and spray type thing?

If yours came off, you either did a bad job with prep, or didn't put enough coats.

Im a PlastiDip advocate... I love the stuff.

I did the grill on my Jeep as well as the aluminum wheels on my Chevelle, and both turned out perfect. As was mentioned, your prep work MUST be thorough & is the most important part of the process. There's no need to scuff, sand or do anything more than thoroughly cleaning the item, wiping it down with alcohol & ensuring it completely dry before you spray. That's the beauty of PlastiDip... that, & the fact that it can easily be "undone". The bubbles you experienced we're most likely the equivalent of 'fisheyes' in paint which is caused by contaminants remaining on the surface being painted that doesnt allow for proper adhesion of paint. Hence why prep is so important.

As for your particular part, I would leave it on the rig. PlastiDip removes much easier, the thicker it is applied. That is to say that, 4+ coats will obviously leave a thicker finish once dry, which results in not only a nicer & more durable surface, but also makes it easier to peel off in one big piece if needed/desired. I would tape off the "Sahara" portion since that's merely a sticker that you may damage if you use an exacto or razor blade to remove the overspray over it. Hold the can approx. 8" away & apply just as you do spray paint. Make the first coat rather thin, so you can still slightly see the chrome underneath. The subsequent coats should offer complete coverage. It's a small area you're doing so do 4 - 5 coats, which as previously stated, will make removing the overspray easier. Once the final coat is completely dry, simply peel off the overspray from the paint & the tape from the sticker.

YouTube has several videos of PlastDipping projects, to include chrome vehicle emblems...

See my previous post re: this topic. I'd recommend Nightshades as I don't think you'd be happy with the plastidip on signal lenses. The nightshades is cheap and it's 'the right tool for the job'/

Plasti-dipped the inside of the Hardtop

Love the look of it

And I second using 'Nite-shade' for the turn signals is a much better approach. Light does shine-thru

Huh? Overspray on what? The brake components? He has them covered with newspaper. He'll be just fine. Even if he did get a little overspray on anything, it wont cause issues. Half the people in here as well as I sprayed the wheels on the Jeep with no issues.

That looks great. I have been thinking about this but wondering if it would come off from taking the top on and off.

11BUL, what type of prep work did you do on the roof? Since mine is off for the season, i think it would be good to go ahead and do. I have it in the garage but uncovered and it will probably be dirty by the end of the summer.

I ordered 5 cans from the ace hardware website; free shipping if you have it delivered to your local store.

the roof on the inside looks great but i am curious also how it will hold up to the hold downs sliding back and forth on it....
also how does this plastidip stuff react on the painted body panel surfaces? i swa some people that did their grills and i like that. with it stand up well on a painted smooth surface of the grill and hood?

I did my turn signals on the front and the side reflectors on the fenders. Turned out great and seems to let plenty of light thru. See my posts on page on or 2 for pics.

Since I am a big advocate of this stuff, I feel I should tell you guys about this site I found.

DISCLAIMER:

I am not affiliated with this site AT ALL. I have absolutely NO VESTED INTEREST in this site, nor do I care if anyone buys from them.

The site is DYC Home - Plasti Dip For Your Car - Resources & More at DipYourCar.com NEW Glossifier

Now, why do I love this site...

1) They sell it by the GALLON, which makes spraying LARGE areas very easy, especially if you load it into a spray gun (watch the videos of painting an entire car.)

2)They have colors you can get nowhere else, exclusive to them.

3)They will mix colors for you (custom colors.)

I just ordered the car kit (red) and will spray my entire S2000. It is already red, but I want to keep it pristine, and this is a great way to do it. Check it out for yourselves. The glossifier and the metalizer are awesome products.

Someone brought this site up a few pages ago. I bought black and the glossy. I can't wait. It's a great site.

Ok... I plasti-dipped that gray/silver cover on the bumper this weekend. Can't believe how nice it turned out. I think I put 5 coats on it. There's just a little bit left in the can.
Two more mods I want to do to the front end yet. The VDP stubby bumper and the Body Armour 4x4 skid plate....

Looks good. I've been planning on doing my locks and Trail Rated badge for like a month now. Things keep coming up and I never get around to it.

I was going to do the same thing, until someone told me it is just a cover piece, which took 15 seconds to remove.

take the cover off, remove the plasti-dip, and then sell the cover to someone that's looking for those. use the cash for your next mod...
