I would definitely heat the cans as much as you can. I usually run them under hot water for 5 minutes, shake them really well then run for a couple more minutes.

As far as distance, in my experience I feel the further you spray the more likely you will get the rough texture. I'm not saying that this is always true but I'm just suggesting you move closer to be about 4 inches away and spray light coats with 50% overlap. I think you will get a good result with that technique.

Hope this helps.

Whenever I've sprayed closer than that it pools and runs from too much product accumulating.

I do that too. Keep thinking of what to dip next. Did my running boards on my old FX4 over the weekend. The jeep wheels are coming as soon as I have time.

This stuff is addicting, might end up doing the whole grill and then the hinges. Just don't want the sun to fade the shiny black and the plasti dip to protect the covered stuff and turn it two tone

Dipped my rims with the anthracite dip from dipyourcar.com came out sick. It looks black because I took a pic at night but its actually like a dark gunmetal

Undipped my grill. It took almost around 2 hours to complete and was a total PITA! Word of advice, use many coats! The spots that got less dip refused to peel. Still, I will redip again later.

Just finished my grill and did the DIY grill guards while I was at it. This is my first time using this stuff and looking at it in the sun it looks like it could use another coat in some spots but I'm lovin' the look!

This stuff is addicting to say the least. I dipped my wheels, my hinges my door locks and my emblems. I also dipped my hood with a punisher stencil that i made out of tag board. I didn't like the way the hood turned out....the plasti dip peeled right off. I do at least 5 coats. My wife was so impressed with the stuff, she had me dip her bumpers and her running boards on her Suzuki. I found that Back to Black shines up the dip nicely.

Not a fan of the gun metal.

Thinkin I may try a few coats of black first then a gun metal to see if it gets darker.

Yikes lol looks like you need either more coats or it hasn't dried. Don't be afraid to use this stuff. I've found the more the better especially when you go to take it off

How many cans did you use for the 6 coats on the wheels?

Man that came out good! Looks as clean as a decal to me. How did the edges come out? I can't see any edge jaggies in the pic (I am on the phone though). Did you tape and pull each coat or wait until the end to pull the tape off? I'm looking to do something similar on the sides of mine.

I'd call it a 10' paint job. It looks good from about 10 feet away, ha ha. I watched some videos from dipyourcar.com about doing stripes and I went with their suggestion that you lay down one heavy coat of dip and then peel the tape immediately. I was in the sun when. it came time to spray, (I don't have a garage), and I think the hood was too hot. The dip dried almost immediately. I peeled the tape about 30-45 seconds after I started painting and the dip had already started to bond and left a ragged edge. I was able to retouch it a bit, but it needs to be redone.

All-in-all I'm pretty pleased with the initial attempt. I expect the next round to be better.

You can't plasti-dip in the sun - dries too fast (as you found out).

I think this is what got me. I tried to do my grill yesterday. What an abortion it turned out to be. I had three spots that were rough, and one spot with a bug stuck in it. And, I didn't know you werent supposed to tape off the rubber seal at the top. But...

It wasnt a complete waste. When I peeled it off, the Jeep lettering on the front stayed intact. No more chrome! So...I will try again next weekend.

Now that's cool. Never seen that on a Jeep before.

What's next? A spoiler?
