You may have cracked your block... Also, what is smoking? Your rad?

Edit: you probably didn't crack the block because of the freeze plugs. Did you overheat the engine?

It sounds like it is a head or head gasket. Does the oil have antifreeze in it? If you do replace the head gasket have the head pressure checked and surfaced.

The leak could just be in the combustion chamber. Is it smoke coming out of the tail pipe or is it steam? You can pull your spark plugs and see if it is by comparing them to each other, the normal plug should have a slight tint of brown and the cylinder that is leaking will look different than the others i belive it could have a white coating but i cant remember for sure.

If it is smoke it should smell like burnt oil. If its steam it should smell like antifeeze. I just did a head gasket on my 2000 grand cherokee and it cost about 140 in parts gaskets, oil antifreeze it really isnt bad job.

So are you losing water or not? Because there's nothing wrong with reusing the antifreeze.

Sounds like you will be pulling the head , when you do take the head to a machine shop and have it checked for cracks and have it surfaced to ensure that it is not warped. At 178k a valve job may be in order too.

Why not pressure test the cooling system? It's probably a bad head gasket but pressure testing the system can tell you that and if a freeze out plug is leaking or something else as well.

I remember changing a head gasket on a 4 cylinder "K" car back in the day. I put my pressure tester on and couldn't find the leak for the life of me, but it wasn't holding pressure. I started pulling spark plugs when I pulled out the #2 plug anti freeze shot out. Confirmed the HG was bad and leaking coolant into the #2 cylinder.
