Question Prison, powerlines and a landfill?

Sorry if this has been talked about a lot, but I've got some questions regarding legality and consequence.

I was routing past a prison at work today and spotted something a map I thought was worth Google Earthing. My room mate and I went down to check it out in his XJ and it seemed promising, the problem is that it lies directly between a federal prison and a state landfill. It also crisscrosses right next to high tension power lines. It is a beautiful trail though. It has a little of everything, rocks, mud, sand and you've got options because it looks like a few trails run into each other.

Google Earth coordinates are 42*05'53.63" N 83*39'04.82" W

The way I see it is that I have one of three options:
1. Hit the local high school and find the local 'truck kids' and find out if it's a good idea
2. Get out and wheel it and accept the potential repercussions.
3. Leave the whole idea alone and walk away.

The 90 min we were out there we saw 4 cars drive by and there is one house in the entire area.

What are your thoughts guys?

ugh.. so where talking about wheeling on some property that A. we don't know who owns. B. Next to federal property, one of which is a prison. I would say do your homework 1st. Find out who owns it before you traspass and give jeepers a bad name.

What he said, you might be wheeling protected wet lands or a buffer for the prison.
You'd lose that jeep, and be paying fines forever. Have respect and tread lightly.

Agreed.

Now a side question: what are the local laws on wheeling public lands in your area? Here in TX it is not allowed, but I know other places have no problem with it. Might want to check that out as well...

I don't know exactly. That's why I threw the thread up BEFORE I dove in. My roommate put up a similar thread on GL4x4 and we're hoping to find out.

I know it's not owned by the prison or the landfill. My guess is it's either part of the farm that's on it's south edge, a government easement for the power lines, or it's owned by a developer. If you look on the map you can really plainly see where the trail ties into the Milan RC Flyers club.

Also, I forgot to mention, you can see relatively fresh tracks on the ground from less than one rain ago. It looks like either an ATV or a gator and one from a larger vehicle with a wider base, probably a truck.

Any suggestions as to who I would call to find out who owns this? I totally agree, I don't want to tread where I'm not welcome. I'm thinking about Mtn. Biking it first, good idea or bad?

In cali If it's not posted you won't get in much trouble, but ther i haven't a clue. That being said I would atleast make an effort to find out who owns and get the proper written pemission. You may get jeepin banned in more areas around if you just go wheeling. And someone owns more land and gets pissed.

You beat me to it Bill. That is public information and the court house will have all of the records. You may have to dig through the maps and find the property for them to tell you who owns it.

Agreed. Or contact the county and see if they can show you the spot you are referring to on the map. If you know who owns the landfill you can also contact them. The prison probably won't be much help, but the others should be able to give you a good sense of what's on or around.

Some of the great scenic trails here in AZ are powerline trails.

Nice work, JCZ! That cleared up a lot about the ownership issue. Turns out it's not an easement like we had thought. It is actually owned by a development company that is 40 miles away in Wayne. It also tells us that it is zoned as "vacant industrial." I am not sure if it makes me feel more comfortable or not. At least it's not owned by the state.

I cant say I would follow this logic. Would you want someone wheeling in your front yard? Most people do not have posted trespassing signs, but that does not mean it is ok for you to wheel their yards. Since this land is privately owned, the owner could have an expectation of privacy whether there is a posted no trespassing sign or not.

I'm not trying to flame, just keeping the discussion open.

I hate to keep harping on this but if it is private property and you don't have permission to be there that is trespassing. If you do anything that causes damage it could be criminal tresspassing.

I'm calling tomorrow if I can catch a break after a call. See if I can get some thing mailed in writing. In the meantime, we're going to Silver lake on Friday.

You never know they might not have a problem with you all being out there. You might even offer to kind of be a steward of the area and keep it clean from debri and vandalism.

You need to consider the previous information..."abandoned property" adjacent to state and federal lands...no house....no chains ...no signs? The risk is very low. It's not like they are clear cutting the lot or drinking it up and destroying property.... It's a trail ride through the woods.

I've crossed into state gamelands (by accident) cruising through some old lumber trails and did not get hassled by the game officials when they met me at the end of the trail. All they wanted to know was why I was on the trail and if I had been drinking alcohol.

In PA, if it's not posted you can travel or hunt on "open" land. If it's posted, you need permission from the land owner otherwise it is trespassing.
