Project Scrap Daddy

Alright, I know I was dead set on putting full widths under my TJ and I even started a thread for the build. But as one good fellow on here put it, "I change my mind like I do my underwear." My dad talked me out of any big modifications to my TJ (also my dd). Instead he proposed we build a Jeep strictly for off roadSo I began the hunt for parts The catch was that all of the money we use to build the rig must come from the cash we get for scraping metal, hence the name Scrap Daddy.

To date, I have amassed a decent amount of parts for the rig including:
-CJ7 frame(with some decent rust)
-YJ tub
-CJ front clip
-D60 rear axle, welded, 4.10 gears
-D44 front, welded, 4.10's
-C6 trans.
-np205 t-case
-Ford 302ci engine(freshly rebuilt)
-Land Rover coil buckets, coils, and electric fan (may use some other parts off of this vehicle if I end up needing to)
-38.5" Ground Hawgs on 8 lug wagon wheels(need 2 more!)
-Old Man Emu shocks
-Bronco drive shafts
-Bronco radiator

As you can see, its basically a Frankenstein project. Still, after all is said and done it should look pretty decent. I have a friend who does absolutley amazing air brush work and shes going to paint it black for me and do a skull and cross bones on the hood. May sound cheesy but when you get a look at how classy her work is you will deffinatley change your mind. But Im a long way from that stage. To date I have gotten the tub off and been working on the frame. Rust had eaten through the rear of the frame where the bumper is welded on. I cut it off and cut out the rust. Then flipped the leaf spring hangers around and welded them on the other way. Then cut about 3 inches off the end of the frame on both sides. Got the D60 under it, leafs are resting on it (doin a SOA lift rear). Should have new mounts and bolted in by tomorrow night. Tires are on rear so I can get an idea of ride height...its BIG! Doesnt sound like much work but I have also been working on the axles. Should be able to get everything I need at Murrays tomorrow and get the front axle put back together too. Frame will be painted after some type of motor mounts for the 302 are welded on and the coil buckets get burned in up front. Oh yeah, its gonna have coils up front by the way, 3-link. At this point Im only missing a few things, most of which are small. I will get pics to post tomorrow night for everyone. Gonna be quite the project!

Haha, yea that was yours. Yea, this one is a little easier to make a reality since I can still keep my dd. Progress seems to be comming along well though. I need a ball joint and some seals and such to finish getting the 44 in order to be installed. Should have that stuff tonight though. And the 60 should be completley bolted in. I really wanted coils in front though so thats the only big thing Im really missing right now, control arms and a track bar. I have the coils and shocks and such. Im going to order some DOM and joints when I get a little more $$. The tub has 2 spots that are rusted through that I gotta patch. Then some bondo work. There will be pics up tonight of it. Im really shootin to get this done in 4 weeks. Every night I get home from work Im in the garage working until I go to bed. I think I can get it done but its a lot of work!

I know its not much of an update but at least you will get some pics and have an idea of what Im dealing with. Im workin on the frame, axles and suspension.
D44 gears all welded up

Front axle needs some work

The end of the frame was rusted through so I had to cut it all out I still need to patch that, you can also see how I flipped the spring hanger around

Other side wasnt nearly as bad but I still cut it down to match

D60 needs a few things too, new perches are getting welded on soon

I have more pics but they wouldnt load for some reason. I'll try putting them up later. Gonna get more work done tonight though so I'll take mroe pictures.

Lmao, you'll get them. Haha, now I know how you felt. Weird, seems like your the only person interested in this build at all. Maybe because you know the kind of work involved in a project like this!

I think if I was building this kind of project I would spend the bucks on a new 'foundation', like one of the NEW frames they sell in quadratec that come powder coated and ready to go.

Seems like a great build. The only criticism that I would have is the CJ frame. Most guys replace the frame on their CJ's with YJ frames when it's time and run the CJ tub on it, as the YJ frame is fully boxed. Will be interesting to see how it works the other way around. Good luck with the build, and why aren't there more pictures????

Yea, I know everyone likes pics. Im a lazy ass and I suck at takein pictures once I get working but I will try. There is one update, my grandfather gave me the 302 but it doesnt bolt up to the C6 I have so its going back to his farm. On a side note I managed to find a running 400 that Im picking up tomorrow or Monday. I will have pics of the power plant up then.

rich-the whole point of this project is to do it for VERY CHEAP and see how it turns out. Im going to do my best to make it strong and not fall apart but Im not dishing out several thousand dollars on this build.

Jeeperman- I know, but its just what ended up falling in my lap so I had to role with it.

Thanks for the support guys...stay tuned!

I wanted an open rear so i could weld it and have a permanently locked rear. Did the same to the front too. Got a good deal too with axles that already had the rear welded so I just bought them.

so you're gonna have power steering with that front welded right? i remember a lot of guys in my old club didn't lock one wheel in front w/ locked front axles. then locked both in for hard stuff, then they'd usually break a driveshaft or something. haha

Oh god yes! Im gonna be runnin 38's with a welded front, power steering for sure. Haha, Im a little worried about maybe the front 44 breaking a u joint or stub shaft but then I'll just upgrade and get a little piece of mind back. We'll see how she holds up when I get there. My driveshafts are pretty heafty though. Thats a good idea with lockin just one wheel in.

I know Im worthless and slow at this whole updateing thing so dont worry about telling me, I already know But the thing is I hardly get time to work on it so Im really not getting much visible work done. Since its such a jumble of things its takeing a lot of engineuity to make this stuff work. Namely, the front suspension as of right now. Getting the coil buckets on the frame was tricky and required a lot of cutting/ welding. The axle was a little easier though. Enough talk, heres some pics:
Got one side al welded in, an idea of the front ride height without tires on (38's so add another 19 inches to that for an idea of the height of the frame w/ tires). Ran out of welding wire before I could burn the other side in

different angle, shows height a little better

Heres a closer shot of the crap I had to go through to make this work, not pretty yet but it'll be cleaned up

Bunch of parts from Autozone Basically the stuff to rebuild the axles

Dads cuttin stuff up

Old crap ball joint out and ready for new

A fresh BJ...ball joint that is

Had to use a piece of 2x2 steel welded to coil bucket to clear the diff.

Closer look at the mastery

Proper shop hydration methods were at hand

Once again, my father at work (he wants to look like the only one working on it so he never takes pictures of me!)

Ok, pictures are way out of order but thats how they loaded on my computer and its late so I dont really care all that much. Maybe I will put the next update in a little better order. Anyway, I anticipate the axles with both be in fairly soon. Then just gotta build the control arms for the front and the suspension will be completed. From there is drivetrain and then steering. This thing is gonna ride pretty high. Like higher than I expected/ really wanted but o well I guess. Hopefully thew wide axles will keep it stable. Until next time, enjoy. Hopefully I can get moving a little faster here pretty soon.

Looks like you are coming right along! Any guestimates on a completion? We looking at July, August?

As far as the ride height, can you just cut the body out and run shorter springs? If you are going to just use it to wheel anyway, you can eliminate a ton of sheet metal on both ends to keep it sitting lower if you want...

Yea, thats true. It will never see the street so Im not worried about cornering or the such. Its just that I want it to be fairly stable in off camber situations. I guess I will just see when its all "done" and make adjustments from there. Thanks for the encouragement too, I feel like its moving so slowly. As far as a completion date, Im gonna shoot really hard for the end of June to mid July. I basically have to have it done by August because thats when the big run is. The rear axle will go in MUCH faster since its leafs. Should have both axles in (minus control arms) by this weekend I would suspect. So long as I get more welding wire that is!

Grn, don't you love us? We complain about not enough photos, and then knock you when you take them... But, if you want to hire a photographer to follow you around, I know a guy....
